Been staying with sister in law recently, she was reminiscing about her local chippy in Manchester circa late 1950’s saying they served butter beans as well as mushy peas, which she still likes with salt and vinegar, that’s a new one on me.

Not quite relevant but when we lived in Belfast and you wanted fish and chips for 2 people you'd asked for 2 fish and chips. When we moved to Huddersfield that had to be fish and chips twice - 2 fish and chips would get 2 fish but one portion of chips.
Also, everywhere seems to call the little bits of skimmed off batter "scraps" ; in Huddersfield they were "bits".

That's brought back memories for me - when we visited our English cousins in Derbyshire, we'd walk up to the chippy, get a "bag of bits" each (I think they were 1d.) then we'd go to the park across the road to eat them. There must have been 1,000's of calories in each bagful!

Leeds home games - lunch was pie, peas and gravy with mint sauce from the Elland Road cafe and for tea (eaten on the bus on the way home) was usually fish, chips and scraps from United Fisheries next to the cafe.
If we stayed in Leeds after a game and went round the pubs they would all have slices of black pudding on the bar for customers.

When we go to The Chip Shop in Confolens (which in these days of Covid is only in good weather when we can sit on their terrace to eat) Mandy knows to add a pile of 'scraps' to Biggles' meal.
I'm sure I remember being able to buy bags of 'broken' crisps too as well as broken biscuits.
