my first view of a silver fox, beautiful beast, ran across the road in front ofme in the middle of the day. I had just rounded a sharp corner and was able to stop and look where he/she went. We stared eye to eye as she/he stopped to. Look also. (not my photo) could not miss the white point on the tail.

That is certainly stunning and I have never seen one.
We did catch sight of an ordinary fox fairly recently during the day. He looked very healthy and was helping himself to some food the cats had left for later!

I thought that I saw a black squirrel in France recently, not sure if such a beast exists other than perhaps in my imagination.

Red squirrels are not all bright ginger. They come in many shades, some almost black. Perhaps it was a (black) red squirrel you saw?
