You should only make a shepherd's pie with real shepherds.

A tragic event but to use kill suggests intent.

On the positive side he says he’s now “become a better chef” instead of the unprofessional, lazy, incompetent, slack arse jerk he was at the time of the incident.

A tragic event but to use kill suggests intent. I thought similarly; "died" instead of "was killed" would have been a better use of words.

I think we are playing semantics.
Would you say that a child died of a series of dog bites, or that a child was killed by an out of control dog?
The latter I suspect - and if so why not killed in this case? It is just that the assailant is a lot smaller - e-coli.

Please share. No inside information it’s all there to see, he tells the court he’s now a better chef. His unprofessional, lazy, incompetent attitude to his work is self evident.

Of course it's semantics and how one chooses to use a word.
The verb to kill can imply intention. The reporter was being dramatic - unnecessarily so in my view.
An attacking dog intends to harm a chef doesn't.

You could argue while she died because of the chef's incompetence she was killed by C Perfringens.

It's always better to cook your mince than mince your cook.

It does not say the chef killed them. It implies that E-coli did. E-coli does kill but as a non sentient bacterium can we say it is intentional? Killed by malaria. Killed by Aids Killed by Covid you takes your money and....

Incidentally, another positive of lockdown was the reduction in hospital admissions for food poisoning.
Which has to say something about the standard of food hygiene at home compared to eating out.

More common but less serious than E Coli except in the elderly where C Perfringens is not nice at all.
