Sat evening
“All international arrivals to the UK will again be required to take pre-departure Covid-19 tests, the health secretary Sajid Javid announced.
The rule applies to all travellers visiting the UK or returning from a holiday, regardless of vaccination status, and will come into force from 4am on 7 December.”

I should have credited my comment on quotes as being a straight C&P from the Guardian so (sadly) it’s almost certainly correct….

At least it can be antigen, don’t a lot of pharmacies in France offer those?

This change has totally ruined our short weekend visit to Barcelona. I know that the rules allow taking the return test before we even leave the UK but we will not risk the whole trip in case of a positive test result. The flight timings make it impossible to take the tests early enough to be able to cancel the flights, hotel and parking. Very sad outcome for us.

There was not an icon to show my understanding and sympathy, only a laughing or thumbs up like so I gave the latter.
For many people a trip to a Foreign country is intimidating when they don't speak the language, hence so many English bars & restaurants etc, they may be in a resort and not have transport, not knowing if or how they can find a test & whether they will get a negative result to be able to return would put many off.
I am in my home village in the UK and have no idea where I can get a lateral flow test done, I speak the language and can be flexible with my plans but someone coming for a weekend break would have real problems.
Also there is the fear that a country might be put on the red list and a whole family be forced into into a quarantine hotel at their cost like recent returnees from South Africa.

You need to scroll down to "Cheap rapid antigen 'fit to fly' tests for UK departures" to see those you can do at home where you then send a photo of the test to the company and they then send you a confirmation document.

Thanks Elsie but thats too many IT steps to go wrong with my shonky internet access here, I remember what happened when Johnny999 went with the cheapest company, if I dont have the test results I can't travel & will lose the ferry cost which is likely to be very high this time.
There is a newish test centre in my village and Express Test at Gatwick, both claim to offer the antigen test for £35 but neither could be booked, it would either default to the £99 PCR test or not show any availability, web sites kept sending me in circles, I was out and about so went to both in person, of course the staff there were able to make a booking for £35 on their mobile phones but not me on my computer.
