9 of us ate together on Christmas day. We did anitigen tests beforehand and were vaccinated. The following day two people had cold like symptoms and subsequently tested positive on antigen tests..now awaiting PCR results (very hard to get a PCR test this way as all slots booked up). Two more of us have symptoms (one of them being me). I have a PCR test booked for tomorrow. The other person has symptoms but tested negative on an antigen test. Having already had Covid I can recognise some of the symptoms as being very similar to Covid, with aches, fatigue and sore throat. Not exactly like a cold. My symptoms are very mild compared to how they were before being vaccinated.
The person we are worried about is my 84 year old MIL, who so far has no symptoms at all and says she feels fine. My partner is negative so far with very mild symptoms. Hard to know what is the best thing to do, as even if you test negative it doesn't seem to relate to symptom severity.

It would seem that you or the other people were already infected before you sat down.. Symptoms do not appear overnight..
"On average it takes 5–6 days from when someone is infected with the virus for symptoms to show, however it can take up to 14 days".

I think they think with Omicron the incubation period is shorter..more like 2-4 days, which would certainly fit with events around Christmas. It raises the question though..with a variant that is much more infectious, and with mild to non existent symptoms in many cases, how on earth do you protect yourself and others without just locking yourself in a cave. 9 of us are potentially infectious but so far only two with positive tests. Some with mild symptoms, some no symptoms.

antigen tests are only reliable to test once you have symptoms.. they recommend 2-3 of them in a period before any event. what a waste of money if some one told you that you are safe to have that many people over, especially with a old person there at the table from just one test beforehand..
EDIT: The above is not correct, see subsequent posts.

No one told us we were safe and the tests we were using were actually free as in borrowed from the NHS. People tested themselves at least twice beforehand, some more than that..which is actually my point . that you can decide to sit alone at Christmas or you can do what you can to make things as safe as possible and accept some risk, but with Omicron this is much more difficult to judge. There was no mad partying beforehand..just shopping and family contact. And so far, despite a few mild symptoms and a positive antigen tests there's not much else to report. We hope it will stay that way. My PCR test is booked for tomorrow and the MIL has an antigen test booked at the pharmacy, but my symptoms have all but disappeared now. Would we have been any worse off if we hadn't tested? It's not something anyone can answer at the moment but I think people will be asking that question soon.

how on earth do you protect yourself and others without just locking yourself in a cave. That's where I have been but not through choice! I have not come into contact with a living soul since returning 13 days ago.
Give my love to MIL and I hope she remains resistant, part of me is feeling that if she is going to contract it then I hope it manifests while she is in your care and not after her return, I hope you have enough test kits remaining for her and that the incubation period will be behind her for her return flight.
Your experience will be repeated in pretty much every household the length and breadth of France on Le Reveillon.

She told me in no uncertain terms that she was not going to get it, even though she sat face to face with the person who tested positive for 5 hours. Who would try and argue with her. But you are right..if she is going to get it I'd rather she was here with us. However the dog jumped on her lap and cut her leg open today, so I think she's keen to go if she can!

Oh dear Linda, hoping your PCR is a negative as well as your MIL antigen test, will she get the results quickly? Are the people who have tested positive feeling reasonably ok? My Grandson has been around his Mother who tested positive on Christmas Day, my son has been doing LFT on him every day (they don't live together) and so far he is ok. He is not vaccinated, even though aged 17. Makes me

The Antigen test results will be known after 10 minutes..my PCR won't be back until tomorrow. The person who was positive on the lateral flow test had that confirmed by PCR, and her husband who was negative on the lateral flow test was also negative on the PCR, so they do seem to match up. We are all vaccinated and boostered.

So our PCR/Antigen tests were all negative in our house and my mild symptoms have gone. The others that got PCRs basically confirmed the results of the lateral flow tests...2 people positive with mild symptoms. Their husbands/wives remain negative. The two that tested positive...one is unwell with other issues and the second has not had a booster shot and is several months on from second dose.
My sister also got Covid over Christmas. Vaccinated, boosted and has had previous infection. She caught it from her stepson who stayed with them the weekend before. It was a similar pattern of infection. Her 80 year old mother-in-law who sat next to her grandson for 8 hours did not get it. Neither did my sister's husband or his daughter, although everyone had a few hours of being a bit achy, which was perhaps the body recognizing the virus and reacting.
