That is a lot, Israel is concerned with 600 and two deaths from omicron. Makes you wonder what the true figure is in the UK as the one in France is more than likely an underestimate. Not everyone will be tested and some will have no symptoms.

the virus is mutating so everyone will be infected. It is the only way it can continue to live on this rock.. Each mutation will infect more people with the weakest of us succumbing to it and the others just living with it as a seasonal bug.. Maybe "10" waves? that also depends were you live so a +/- 2 waves.. Spain in the troughs of its 6th wave..

We were having a discussion about this tonight...
There could have been some 'catch-up' with numbers unreported during the holidays - It could be that a huge number of responsible people got tested before attending Xmas Eve get-togethers - but maybe the figures just confirm that we are losing/have lost the battle to contain the virus.
I think Ibis is right - everyone will be infected sooner rather than later, we just have to hope that now it's become so efficient at infecting it's hosts it doesn't find a way of evading our vaccines.
Happy New Year!

Which is why the 7 day average is a much better gauge - although that is frightening enough. We were never going to "win" the battle with this virus after it had escaped China. We have however now got defences against it (vaccines and medications) and with the omicron variant perhaps a hope that it is becoming less virulent. It may well be that in a couple of years it will indeed be just like getting a bad cold. It is being suggested that the so called Russian Flu of the late 1800s may have been a coronavirus and this became relatively benign in the course of a few years. www.thenakedscientists.com/articles/questions/could-1890-pandemic-have-been-coronavirus

Johnson of course putting wealth before health has declared that there is no need for further measures at this time.

To be fair the government here is taking a similar approach to Johnson- put all your faith in vaccines. People can still celebrate on Friday night and schools will re-open as planned on Monday, the only additional measure is to keep nightclubs closed for a further three weeks.

Have you forgotten the changes in numbers permitted for events, 5000 max outside and 2000 max inside? Unless, of course, they are political or religious meetings, where the rules don't apply.

Will that really reduce hospitalisations which are already at 17K? I would actually like to see tougher restrictions here such as a ban on New Year parties and delaying the return to school which various health bodies advised.

No one will die if NYE celebrations are cancelled or large scale events are curtailed, however...

I'm surprised they didn't delay the return for primary schools, as they are currently one of the most infected age groups. It doesn't seem right to send young children back to school while the risk of infection is so high - and before they've had the chance to get their first shots.
The first 5-10 year old vaccination slots became available in this area last week and were all snapped up in minutes. Although that indicates that demand is higher than anticipated (which is good) it shows that the number of slots allocated to them was woefully insufficient and needs to be addressed urgently.
It beats me why they can't have a nurse come and vaccinate them 'en masse' at school, rather than every parent having to take each child 45km to the hospital - which I'm sure some parents won't or can't do because they have to work, don't have transport, etc...
They are doing saliva tests on Monday at grandson's school and (assuming it's negative) he has a RDV for his first vaccination on Wednesday.

That is the way that i understand they are doing it here in Spain ( in the school) with the magical number of 80% already achieved at least in our region.

M. Veran announced during the debate (for the new laws announced on Monday) in the French parliament today that today's figure will be over 200,000.
This makes me think that there are absolutely loads of tests being done in France, as the government hoped for les fêtes de fin de l’année.
It also makes me wonder why the UK figures are not higher. Is it because less tests are being done or are the UK government not telling the whole truth!
