Don't get me started on those ubiquitous white plastic B&Q mock Georgian front doors with the fanlight incorporated in the door itself. The epitome of bad taste being used all over the world on farmhouses, cottages, new builds, and suburban estates.

Don't get me started on white plastic anything! Even back in the UK, the exterior frames of our double-glazing got a couple of coats of brown spray-paint to complement the hardwood façade. We were lucky enough to have a Vial within striking distance here in France. They did a lovely range of wood-effect UPVC doors, windows and shutters. Fourteen years on, they're as good as new, despite blistering sun, frost and the odd tempête. Fourteen years on and one day I'll remember which way the handles turn to shut them rather than tilt/turn whatever

Thanks for all the replies. Now I remember what the UK windows are called I agree about French windows opening all ways, much easier to clean. Our windows have all got the thingummyjigs so we can adjust them. But if I was building a new house I would look for local windows but with a casement. One only needs a small opening not a whole window. Keep well everyone
