If I sell my house in France am I allowed to keep my French bank account open? It would be really useful for travelling in EU, paying in cafes etc. and motorway tolls.

Vzry usefull and very expensive, an multi-currency account from one of the on line providers whose names evade me at present would give you everything in one account.

Agree tim17. We had our account for a number of years while we were living in Germany before making the final move to France.

Having bank accounts in two EU countries is one thing. It would be interesting to see whether the option is still practical post-Brexit if your main address will be in UK!

Traveller, as others have said, you should ask youir bank.
It is technically possible, because it's at the discretion of the bank (for example, you can open and maintain a Credit Agricole Britline account while resident in the UK). But someone else pointed out it's pricey, compared to those multi-currency accounts which are now available (Wise, etc.).
If it's important to you to have an IBAN which begins "FR" - perhaps you have direct debits or something similar - then you can ask your bank. They may be reluctant, but may be less so if you have clear plans to return to residency at some point.

Why not just get a Monzo, Revolut, or Starling account and card (the free versions). They are multi-million currency so you can then them in most countries in the world.

I tried that - but some institutions require you to have an IBAN beginning "FR". Otherwise, it's a great solution - I'd add Wise to the list.

I believe that some of them will give you both an FR and UK Iban or perhaps I imagined that.
I wasted a lot of time this week trying to add a Revolut account of someone that I will be paying money to soon as a destinataire on my Credit Agricole account, it accepted it and confirmed it was a UK account & then would not go any further.

A lot of companies, institutions and governments require for the IBAN to be in the same country as the debit is going to be paid.
It makes it easier to recover the money, is probably cheaper for the bank and receiver and is easier to control the movement of money by the government.

Perhaps you should get your bank to read this article www.capital.fr/votre-argent/virements-prelevements-la-discrimination-a-liban-est-desormais-sanctionnee-par-la-dgccrf-1421537Part of the text (translated): Companies refusing transfers or direct debits from customers whose IBAN is not French are now sanctioned by the General Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF). The fine could reach 375,000 euros.

FROM, does it also apply to TO? The article says: Bien que depuis 2012, les virements et prélèvements doivent être acceptés vers, et depuis, tous les comptes de la zone européenne de paiement (espace SEPA)

Thankyou Elsie and my apologies for the capitalization, on the phone there is not the option for underline, bold or italics.
I tried to read the article but nothing happened, often its because it turns out to be a PDF and 12 hours, sometimes even the day after I get a notification that it has been downloaded but it does not say and I have no idea where to find it and all the others.
