When we decamped France for Spain we kept our CA A/C open purely because of the Bip & Go peage tag we has which covered both France and Spain but required a French bank A/C to service it. When we decided to give up the tag after the last DD had gone out we drained the remaining money out of the A/C on the debit card then cut it up and sent it back them back with a letter instructing them to close the A/C.
Their response was that we had to attend the branch to do that which I told them was totally impractical and we couldn't and wouldn't do it, I also told them that that was my final word on the matter and that any further attempt to communicate with me would be ignored.
Clearly they failed to comply with my instruction to close the A/C as a while later I got a letter complaining that I was overdrawn because there had been no money in the A/C to pay their own recurring charges but true to my word I ignored it and never heard from them again.
I should add that when we left France we left zero assets behind so there was nothing for them to go after if they had been minded to.

I wouldn't put it past them to try. I attended my local CA (branch from Hell) several times trying to get my account closed but it still took about 3 months to achieve it and they still kept sending me promos and loan offers for nearly a year afterwards. They were a total train wreck.

Having yet more problems with CA is there a customer friendly bank in France? They have gone from being an OK bank to a set of W********, just when we start to get our state pensions, so a potential loss of capital to themselves, idiots.

Thanks for all the comments, I’ve had a look at Starling, but in the light of recent comments I agree, it’s probably a waste of time actually trying to close the account as our bank is just as bad, last time we had an appointment the person we were to meet had “just left the office” and would be back shortly, which I considered really rude, only to be beaten by the time he arranged his day off when we were to meet but didn’t tell us. so we’ll use up the money tell them to cancel any prélèvements I’m not sure if we should give our new address or not.

They have gone from being an OK bank to a set of W********, just when we start to get our state pensions, so a potential loss of capital to themselves, idiots. I switched from Crédit Agricole Alsace Vosges to the online Boursorama a few years ago. I'd had problems setting up a new recipient and making a transfer to another French bank account in less than about a week or so and just gave up on them being able to provide a good customer service. The whole switching process was easy and without problems as I was transferring all the funds from another French bank. The CA account was closed. There weren't any problems with the transfer of direct debits, etc. over the month or two of the change over. I get my state pension paid into Boursorama. see my comment here in the Revolut discussion on the ease of transferring money into and out of Boursorama theotherfrenchforum.freeforums.net/post/27596/thread
