Sorry, did not read the article but who was the original complainant or was it a group thing? That might revile why it was turned down. 99% of any case in America will go against the French.. It does not really matter as an typical american will just call it "swiss" cheese.. Reveal. Quite.

Indeed they are not all the same. I have had German Cheddar - not an experience I will rush to repeat. But Gouda is a cheese with protection but the difference in qualities depending where you buy it is enormous. UK - tends to be a waxy fairly tasteless experience (much akin to German Cheddar). Dutch Gouda teds to be less waxy and a much stronger taste. France you can buy Gouda - tending towards the waxy tasteless end of the spectrum and old Gouda which is much more like the Dutch cheese I have enjoyed. German Gouda tends to be a bit between those two. But al of this Gouda comes from a small area of the Netherlands. A lot of the difference with any cheese is whether it's matured or not? Cantal jeune doesn't bear any relation to Cantal vieux, Gouda is an excellent example. I've tasted old Gouda brought from Holland in order to avoid having to spend any money in France (  ) and it was sublime! Nothing like the plastic 'young' version. Doubt anything will prevail against French protectionism, though. If only they didn't take the pee quite so blatantly over customers paying through the nose for 'Made in France'
