We, along with others in our town of 8-9.000 inhabitants, received a letter, photo below, announcing changes to the sac jaune system; if it's a wrapping or container, of whatever sort except glass, it can now go in the recycling. Summed up by the central phrase of the letter: Désormais, n'hésitez plus : si c'est un emballage, il peut aller au recyclage. Just emptying it suffices, we don't even need to wash it!

We aren't allowed to recycle yoghurt pots, plastic food trays or the thin plastic wrapping stuff. Your area must have a super, duper plastic processor. Or else they are burying all of it 😨.
Polystyrene disappeared a few years ago in food-use hereabouts. Morbihan has always been very pro recycling but it sounds as though other areas have caught up now 😊. Which is good news ..

Was it a requirement to wash before? They are either trying to get give the lazy people to recycle by making it easier and/or they are saving the communities water as the separation facility probably manages their water usage more efficiently than a homeowner.

Maybe your area did not have a big enough storage facility. They do not bury it but ship it around the world to processors.
Everything has a price per ton.

It's much the same here in the Aveyron. Just about everything goes recyclable except glass. It makes life much simpler for us, but I do wonder where it all really goes......!

I really doubt it Sue. Those plastic food trays that you cannot recycle are probably expanded Polystyrene, although in fairness some automated sorting systems cannot handle black items. Those plastic yoghurt pots that they won't take - choice of two materials Polypropylene or polystyrene. Next time you buy yoghurt look at the recycling logo the pots will either have PS or PP marked. Just checked our fridge and we had 3 different yoghurts, one artisanal packed into a waxed paper non-recyclable and with the wax I am not sure how degradable, one PP and one PS. As for total recycling, it does depend on how much sorting is being done before the recyclate is sold on (sometimes at negative price) as to how good the system is. Good for your waste bin does not necessarily equal good for the environment as ibis has rightly identified.

Polystyrene! I understood that even with the extension of what can be recycled now, polystyrene was forbidden? It's the last bulky item of packaging still going to landfill here, but it would be great if that goes in the yellow bin too. We're bracing ourselves for the introduction of a pay-as-you-throw system this year. If it's as efficiently managed as it has('nt) been in Dordogne, boy will there be a lot of fly-tipping!

49 has introduced a pay-as-you-throw system. My understanding of it is that it only applies to ordures ménagères and is based on the number of collections not weight. As we only generate a small amount of household waste we will only put that bin out every other time ( especially in winter - in summer if it starts to pong then it will be every time. As for recycling we can put the same as 47 in our yellow bin.

Here, in Lower Normandy, we had the same letter. Really pleased apart from the fact that we do not get yellow bags and so have to feed the plastic into the village recycling collection bins. So, although they say no need to wash, we do wash items as otherwise the job would be pretty unpleasant.

Over these figures is chargeable.

Nothing like going on here. Two communal bins, one for household stuff, one for recycleable stuff. Sadly they removed the ones that used to be just across the road from me. Now I have to carry them 500 yards uphill to the nearest alternatives.

Now I have to carry them 500 yards uphill to the nearest alternatives. I am currently in dept 22 and like Aardvark says we have 3 communal bins at the end of the road (for about 40 houses) that take everything except, glass, containers and cardboard/newspapers, although everything is in black bags so the system is open to abuse. I see people from the town nearby using our bins as they pass as it is more restrictive in the town. The OP will be getting a letter soon, dictating the amount of collections that are free and what they need to pay for, either by weight or number of collections

The OP will be getting a letter soon, dictating the amount of collections that are free and what they need to pay for, either by weight or number of collections Currently it's one collection per week, for an individual wheelie bin (household refuse) and two or three sacs jaunes.
