My journey from home to Caen and back, using the A61, A62, A10, A28 and A84 (of top of my head without checking map) cost me a total of 178€. Very interesting and if points were awarded you would get them but it's yet another response that clutters the thread without giving any information relevant to the question asked.
Yes I know that the tarifs have risen (2% on this section) yes I know that some sections like around Paris can be more expensive per km, the section of the A89 in question is charged at the same tarif per km as the one further along between Perigueux and Brive, I know that their grille tarifaire shows the toll to be €3.50, the question is why is 34km charged instead of the 7.5km travelled?
As said above - nobody will know your answer unless they work at the company who runs the toll system. Horses mouth and all those sayings comes to mind..
As you cannot "post a photo" of the offending ticket (receipt) we have to take your word and vision that it is what you say it is..
Hopefully someone will come along and give you the telephone number to telephone.. Remember, emails do not work in France like they do in other parts of the world; ie. do not expect a quick reply or reply at all to an email.

As I have been waiting for lunch I decided to check your trip on Mappy. A89 j13 to j13.1 comes up with 0.70 €. You should take it further and please let us know how you get on.

I can't answer your question, but a short distance on the motorway from Marmande to Bordeaux costs similar if I remember correctly..about 7 euros for what is a relatively short bit of motorway.
I guess the autoroute people have their reasons. When you find out you can let us know.

...it's yet another response that clutters the thread without giving any information relevant to the question asked.... Thread clutter is like thread drift; it happens, and there's nothing you can do about it.

It's not 7.5km though. On entering the A26 from Calais there is no toll plaza. The first exit is 17km at Nordausques (€1.30 class 1 or €1.80 class 2) and the second is at Wizernes 31km (€2.50 class 1 or €4.00 class 2) Beejay, this thread and my question is about the A89 from Bordeaux to Clermont Ferrand, specifically journeys in either direction between sorties 13 and 13.1 which is a distance of 7.5km.
I used the A26 as an example as I know there you (not you personally!) have already travelled quite some distance racking up a toll charge before you hit the barrier which issues the ticket, were that the case on the A89 I would understand but on joining at junction 13 from a route départementale I recieve a ticket, 7.5 km later I hit the barriére de péage where I have to pay €3.50 and the reciept says I joined at sortie 13, left at sortie 13.1 and travelled 34km.

Just looked at travel from Mussidan to Clermont Ferrand and interestingly it does not recommend entering the A89 at 13.1 but keeps you on RN until St. Astier. I wonder if that is done because this is an expensive stretch of Autoroute. Mussdan does seem to be a major peage across the route, so there may be an implied assumtion that thise entering and leaving will use the section before/after the toll station.

Thanks Exile, I will be trying to work some alternative routes but I have a feeling that joining the A89 further East than my ideal will only reduce the charge by 10cts(ish) per km saved, I think that after passing through the barrière and paying I am still on a chargeable section for a further 26.5 kms, it could be that the bretelles within that stretch are free exit from an Eastbound direction but with barriéres on the westbound bretelles.
The answer or clue to it will be contained within the grille tarifaire, I just need to get my head around it.

That will be from the algorithm that Mappy uses which does not take into account the (as yet unknown) particuliarity of that section, yes it should be about 70cts for 7kms but the grille tarifaire shows the toll to be €3.50
