Were we noticed it most was on a shiny wall with tiles on the bottom half in what will be the utility room, it is one of the coldest rooms in the house for some reason.....it has dried out after about 2-3 days with the heating on etc......

Agreed, a VMC should be running 24/7 especially during your absence. We have had a few houses over the years some with condensation but others with zero damp issues. We have never had a VMC but what would happen insurance wise if the electricity is left on in a holiday home and it caused a fire? I used to think the power had to be switched off if the house was empty but am probably wrong on that.

It was rumoured that insurers required you to close shutters whenever you left the house unoccupied. Holidays, weekends away, a day out shopping? Lots of urban/suburban/rural legends blowing in the wind.

That might do for one room what a VMC will definitely do for a whole house unless it was a single outbuilding then I would not concentrate my efforts purely on the room that is the first to show signs of damp.

You would think so, but I absolutely vouch for it keeping my condensation right down. I leave the internal doors open by the way. Doing the maths At trickle it is extracting about 10 litres per second. So 800,000 litres per 24 hours. Assuming my small house is 100sqm, the total house volume is around 200,000 litres. That's 4 air changes every 24 hours. A proper VMH probably does this per hour, but for an unoccupied property it's enough to keep the condensation out.
