with modern and up to date French sockets the phase and neutre are inserted first, followed by the terre into a face that is flush to the front of the socket.I thought that all French sockets had to be recessed with un puit? That was one of the non conformités listed on the diagnostique électrique of the property I am buying, every single item on the checklist was a non conformité or dangereuse! It is very possible that the sockets failed because they had no shutters for the pins, very, very common in older, pre '80's, properties.

All valid points Ledee. I'm just one of those- If it ain't broke don't fix it types. As for shutters, worst design fail ever. Bloody things never shove aside to let you get the plug in.

@ JohnnyD: living outside the law with Schuko compatible plugs? This would make hundreds of millions of Euro cables illegal....As long as your plug accepts the protruding French earth pin you don't have to worry. Schuko only power sockets and plugs: not a very good idea.

And once you manage to beat the bloody thing into the socket you find when removing it you pull the socket out of the wall.

@ Aardvark, la fixation à griffe, the old French standard for sockets and switches, is still in the French electrical heritage. Not allowed anymore in new builds as from 2004. So sooner or later this will become a problem of the past (around 2199?).

It will only become a thing of the past when all the old houses are rewired to a more modern standard. So a lot of Brit expats with pockets full of money have a mammoth task ahead.
