Oh. This isn’t a thread about Boris Johnson then...

I bought my Whitworth spanners and sockets when I got my first 1950s Aston Martin. Now they are very seldom used apart from occasions when nothing else seems to fit.

My thoughts did stray to another subject when I wrote the final sentence in my op but my sentiments on the shifter are genuine. They're only good for skint knuckles. The other useless tool only has to walk along the street to skin his.

I'll bet some of you guys still have your first Zeus Charts along with your Whitworths etc.

I had to google Zeus Charts - I can think of one who might still have his.

I thought this thread was going to be about Boris Johnson. I have four of those adjustables. Three different sizes and a fourth in stainless that I bought for my boat tool kit. I do agree they can be a pain in the butt unless they work smoothly without excessive play. 4 adjustable Boris Johnsons? In which case I have to agree about the pain in the butt comment

@ HVM, an even more useless tool is this auto adjusting wrench. Must have had a blackout when everywhere around me the sign SALES made me believe that one day it might be useful.Still waiting. First of all: an incredible amount of play. Not a bug, no, a feature: inside they've incorporated a clever auto discharge function: the battery is always empty....I should give it away, but I don't want to make enemies. The chisels and pointed pliers from the family toolbox (grandfather, father, uncle) are there to stay. You really should grind the head burrs of the percussion tools before you hand them down. Given a good bash with a decent hammer and the burrs could break off and 9 times of 10 will go somewhere where it hurts.

@ Polarengineer, don't you worry, only the auto adjusting spanner has to go... The other tools, family heritage, are here to stay. In one piece in a drawer or toolbox, or slightly disintegrated with detached metal fragments in my body....all in the family.

I'll bet some of you guys still have your first Zeus Charts along with your Whitworths etc. I used mine yesterday because I did not trust my memory for a tapping drill size (I was correct though!) dated 1974 and cost 50p, I just walked 15 paces from the kitchen to check!!!
I have later less dog eared ones in my workshop, actually in storage now awaiting the new workshop, I keep the old one here for my bricolage.
Whitworth or BSF (they are the same A/F dimensions) spanners are handy for certain pipe fittings or my old machine tools, my lathe , pillar drills, milling machine, overhand planer.

I'll bet some of you guys still have your first Zeus Charts along with your Whitworths etc. Anybody that would ever throw theirs away is a useless tool themselves and not worthy of ever having been given a set as an apprentice.
Nobody that bought a set with their own money would ever throw them away, its not something that will ever be superceded or made redundant.

You will have to explain that to me. Your two previous responses don't exactly complement each other.
