Can we please try and be a bit disciplined when referring to import charges.
In most cases this will be VAT plus a collection charge. According to the French customs site VAT is due on imports from the first euro. In practice I have seen quite a few examples where this has not been applied. For some specific items there may be duty to pay, then VAT and then the collection charge.
If we always refer to these import charges as duty it can create misunderstandings. In my case, I can not be more specific. As stated, we received a 'gift'. The contents were not itemised and it is unlikely that the powers that be could determine how much tax to charge on each item especially as one was an Amazon voucher! All I know is that we had to pay a hefty sum for receiving this gift from the UK, where in my mind the customs declaration was filled out incorrectly and which had a small monetary value. There should be an itemised bill from the French customs - otherwise how do you know you have been correctly charged.

Next time you need buckets, I would recommend these Stubbs buckets. I would say they are practically indestructable. Have they been subjected to the horse-chewing test? And they're a bit on the expensive side compared to what Crystal recommends.

Now I have seen the photos it has confirmed what I thought, that the as yet indestructible builders bucket that I have is a French feed bucket.
15 years ago I was in the middle of les gros œuvres and getting through bulders buckets by the dozen, they were being filled with mortar and render and lifted up the scaffolding by an electric hoist.
I moved my then girlfriends parents from the family farm to their retirement house, I saved a couple of the buckets that were being thrown away and the one remaining (other lost) is still perfect after 15 years of my abuse.
I am so attached to it like any really good tool, I will need a few more for the new project and until now never thought that I would ever be able to find any.
They told me that they came free with the animal feed that they bought.

Thanks for the link PE. My problem with the Stubbs bucket is that (apart from being so very expensive) they are simply the wrong shape for my two boys. They eat from the ground in the paddock, where it can be a bit muddy/dusty. Being so tall, the buckets can easily tip over - especially when 550kg of clumsy horse paws at his bucket from sheer excitement and empties the feed onto the ground. Such a waste. As it is, he can tip the wider shorter buckets but finds it harder when they sit inside an old car tyre. The ones I've ordered come in different colours so each horse can have his own colour (important for not mixing feeds up when they might contain specific supplements/medications). I bet those of you who are not horsey never realised that choice of a horse feed bucket could be such an exacting science!

Yes, I sit them in an old car tyre as I feel it is the natural position for the horse to feed from the ground. If you can find two tyres, one slightly larger to sit the bucket in, then they should stay put. My animal also get realy excited for breakfast and now he only oiks it out of the tyre when he has finished and is looking for crumbs under and around it. Yeah, not cheap, but you only need to buy it once as it lasts forever, it is really solid and itself weighs heavy when empty. They are available in different colours.

Which photos were you looking at LD? The only ones I can see are in PE's links - the Stubbs buckets, which are very, very much British.

For sure but my bucket came from a French farm that had gone back for hundreds of years in the same family and will have come from their feed merchants, mine does not have the metal tabs but very very strong plastic ones.
I was told it was a feed bucket but had my doubts as I got the impression they were a throw-away item which is exactly what they were doing but it has proved so robust and increvablethat I would never want a builders bucket again.
Until today I was not sure that it was indeed a feed bucket regardless of the country of its provenance.

We weren't in to receive the parcel and DIL paid online and we reimbursed her. Expensive gift but intention was good. Water under the bridge now, but I'm wary to order anything from UK now which comes direct from seller.

The parcel has just been delivered and there was nothing to pay. So I'm none the wiser, but a whole lot happier.

Last September I received a parcel (over €135 value) and no VAT to pay. Today I have received a similar sized parcel from the same source and with a similar value and have just been relieved of €50 - €42 TVA and €8 to La Poste.
