All cars are girls in our house. Always have been, eg the Corvette was called Charlene, the Picasso is Fifi, the RR is Caroline (after my auntie who bought it for me), the Integrale was Lola, and so forth. Never occurred to me that a car could be masculine.

I always thought it stemmed from the early cars that were cantankerous to start, unreliable, would not stop, made a lot of noise. That's why they were male names and not female. They picked up female names when they were no problem and went like a dream, fellas then fell in love with them and now we can't do without them.

My old van has been called a bastard a few times but never thought of it as a female.

I take it it's a diesel in which case it may be that all you need do is take it for a so called 'Italian tuneup'.
Simply put that means giving it a good thrashing for a few minutes winding it up to high revs between gear changes.
So long as there is nothing actually wrong with the car to cause excessive emissions 9 times out of 10 that will get you through the test.
Clean oil is a big factor so with an older car it's always good insurance to change the oil immediately before a CT.

She passed with flying colours! So relieved. Out of interest how do you pick the sex of a car? La voiture - leads to cars being feminine.
