For the last couple of weeks this owl has been visiting us. He/she always sits on the same post and is there every morning and every evening, from about 5pm. I thought it was a bit early for owls to be out, but it comes every day, around the same time. I took the photo through the kitchen window, so it's not too sharp...will try to remember to leave it open so I can take some better ones without scaring him/her away.

In our 18 years in Finistere we only saw one owl and we've no idea what type it was. You lucky beggar.

They are diurnal and are around in the daytime unlike most other owls.

Two of mine were on a wall in front of my house alternating warning calls because the neighbour’s cat was out and about. The cat is terrified of them and ended up cowering under my car. One owl was easy to see as it was standing on a stone sticking out from the wall, the other took a while to locate, it was standing in a hole in the wall. While all this was going on I was sitting reading in front of my house, they weren’t worried by me being there.

You should look under the fence for owl pellets, regurgitated mouse bones and fur. As a lad I tried to gather a complete mouse skeleton from them, but I cannot remember if I was sucessful.

Lucky you, Crystal! I've never seen an owl except on tv. Heard them as we're very near the woods. Have become very interested in birds lately and would love to see one.

Get yourself a good guide book and some decent binoculars, spent time outside and be quite, one year I noted 50 species of birds I had seen or heard, hearing and identifying is easier now with a computer, I have never seen a Nightjar or a Nightingale but can still hear them, also Moths and Butterflies are interesting subjects as well as Bats, not seen many different species of them.

Different post tonight! - he must have got bored with the view from the other one He sat on there without moving a muscle from about 6pm right through until nearly dark, about 9.30. He's not easily scared, he looked over but never flinched when I flipped up the fly screen to take his photo. Not a great photo though, I think the sun was too strong, I'll keep trying... ...just noticed the cobweb!
