The darts season is well under way with the World Matchplay Championship being held in the brill Winter Gardens in Blackpool. It’s great to see it back ‘home’ after having been played at Milton Keynes behind closed doors last year. The crowds for the first two days was restricted to under a thousand but from today the place will be full thanks to Boris’s ridiculous end of lockdown measures. All the usual suspects are there and through to the next round, those who have played that is with favourites Peter Wright ( snakebite) and Gerwyn Price (Iceman) not convincing but good enough to beat what was in front of them. Last years winner from Belgium, Dimitri van den Bergh is my favourite but anything can happen in a knock out stage.

Many years ago we were on a skiing holiday with a couple who were mad keen on darts. They came with us on the promise I'd arrange for them to watch the finals of iirc the World Championships. I'd arranged an appartment with a south facing balcony on which I bodged up a satelite dish so all tickety boo. Finals day arrived & after lots of beer & stuff we all sat down to watch what was going to be a cracker of a match when the power went off due to the village filling up with guests & overloading the supply.
We never did see the game.

It’s been a great tournament so far with the top performance so far by defending champion Dimitri van den Berg who outplayed the world champ Gerwyn Price. The Belgian will now play outsider Krzysztof Ratajski from Poland in the semi final. The second semi will be between the winners of the quarter finals featuring ex world champ Peter Wright with the outrageous Mohican versus the unpredictable Michael Smith and the previous multiple world champ , the irrepressible Michael van Gerwin versus Nathan Aspinall who can be both brilliant or rubbish in the space of two minutes ! Game on.

What has happened to MvG? He used to dominate.. Maybe he had children? Sports people seem to have a drop off when they procreate.

Law of the jungle I suppose ? He was the best around for a few years but others are now around to really compete against him.

or Eric Bristow, Jocky Wilson etc I used to love watching these great players live in the 70s and 80s. They did loads of exhibitions plus tournaments on the road. A typical darts exhibition evening would have had Bristow, Jocky, Leighton Rees, Bobby George, Alun Evans etc etc all on the same bill.

Should be a cracking final between Dimitri van den Berg, the holder and world no.2 Peter Wright who averaged a mind boggling 110 to beat ex champ van Gerwin in the semi final. Anything could happen, v d Bergh is ice-cool which may make the difference.

Brilliant from world champion Peter ‘ Snakebite’ Wright. Van den Bergh didn’t play badly but just couldn’t match the 106 average plus the consistent finishing, mainly on d16. Wright has to go down as one of the all time greats alongside Bristow, Lowe and Taylor etc etc.
