Miserable job, hedge cutting and clearing up after. I drove past a hedge yesterday that looked like it had been cut with a laser, 50 m long, straight, sharp edges and dense. That's dedication if you like.

I've got a Stihl petrol motor with hedge trimmer, chain saw, strimmer and extension pole. It's great to be able to go anywhere without a trailing lead and to swap the components. It's a little heavy for overhead work on tall hedges but the strimmer is excellent and the chain saw extension makes pollarding a breeze.
The disadvantage is largely the capital cost.

I'd also add that the cost of the stihl outfit will set you back about £1200.
One other thing, for the hedge trimmer attachment its really worth getting one where the angle is adjustable. It costs more but I couldn't live without it.

Because of the battery longevity issue I would never buy a battery powered garden tool. My first choice has always been petrol, but a well known brand not some generic "here today, gone tomorrow" label. Now that I've lost the strength I once enjoyed my plan of action is with mains electric. Things are arranged here so that a 20 metre length of decent thickness extension lead reaches all of my hedge jobs. The rest gets attacked with a small petrol chainsaw.

My plan of action while I still have the strength is to not have any hedges to trim, not have any wooden fences to blow down, maybe not even have any flower borders to tend and dig over, grass I think will always be worth the effort.
Having seen my family again for the first time since before covid they no longer have a single blade of natural grass between them yet loads of bushes, hedges & shrubs which are getting away from them.

That's dedication if you like. Us dedicated types lay a tarpaulin or a couple of garden sheets at the foot of the hedge. You'd be amazed how easy it makes clearing up after cutting

My plan of action while I still have the strength is to not have any hedges to trim That was exactly my plan of action when we came here, but there are some situations that just cry out for shelter and privacy. The best course of action is to choose something that only needs cutting once a year. Eleagnus ebbingii is a doddle....

You mean like all the Gens de Voyage neighbours I will soon have!
I'm hoping to fit in by moving into a big **** off caravane myself, if it doesn't go walkabout that is.

Forget the hedges, pcpa! Get yourself some powerful electric fencing.....preferably wired to the mains

I get great pleasure in reading through this thread and knowing that hedges or gardens are of real concern for me btw I have a hedge trimmer with an extension capability of a couple of meters for sale (along with a huge range of other tools and related equipment) Please PM me if interested.
