Angela Thirkell, now there’s a blast from the past. I’m reading “High Rising” I said to my other half, it’s interesting to actually read something from the inter war era rather than something which is merely set in a certain time, but he responded, as someone has just bought him a set of Just William books, which he is reading avidly, there’s no difference, William just portrays the time in the same way as my novel, and I think he’s right.

Just started Irene by Pierre Lemaitre. Enjoying it - bought on spec, but it's well-written and the nowadays-obligatory-detective's-backstory is well done.
It's a bit gruesome.

Just finished 'Le Cercle' by Bernard Minier. Toooo long, padded out with the usual French pseudo-psycho agonising 😁 Now re-reading Gilles Legardinier 'Completement Cramé' for light relief.

Certain lightweight French books I can read, but it's a lot more effort than reading in English.

Not showing off! Sadly, since the confinements and the demise of several good friends, reading French is a poor substitute for speaking it. The biggest challenge has always been to find humourous French books. Any amount of navel-gazing, tragedy and policiers, but where are the laughs?

It's a translation from Swedish which I've read, plus the follow-up.

It is American. Normally, there is very little US humour that I find particularly funny. Unfortunately the link that I posted does little to convey the skill of how Klane made the absurd seem feasible in the book.

Still reading The Second World War by Winston Churchill. Nearly at the end of vol 4, 2 to go. Truly fascinating.

I'm almost at the end of 'Girl on a Train' by AJ Waines.
I bought it at the same time as 'The girl on the Train'. I wasn't particularly impressed by either book, but this one is especially annoying. I am now very tired of the author's incessant use of similes. Her plot, stretching the notion of suspended disbelief beyond my ability to believe in so many completely incredible coincidences, has become almost boring.
Yet she received quite impressive reviews.
