Signs for lost Children by Sarah Moss, yet again this was a book I’d left because I didn’t think I’d like it, but on the contrary it made me want to visit Japan, which unfortunately I’m never likely to do, according to the acknowledgments she got a grant to visit several times, I guess that’s what comes of an Oxford education and lectureship at Dublin, yes I am slightly jealous. There is a book which comes before this in the life of the characters so I’ll have to look for that now.

Powers and Thrones, history of the Middle ages by Dan Jones. It's a big one, over 700 pages. I'm half way through. I normally find Dan Jones easy to read, he makes history entertaining. But I think he might have bitten off more than he can chew with this book. It covers a thousand years of history, and of necessity, it contains a lot of bare facts which you find yourself having to put into place rather like a jigsaw. Still, I'll persevere as it wasn't cheap.

The Tidelands series by Philippa Gregory. I like her Tudor historical novels but finding this series a bit Catherine Cookson, lightweight.

Light reads are what I’ve been choosing recently. I’ve just started ‘Iced’ by Felix Francis, son of Dick Francis, a famous jockey who turned to writing about crime in the horse-racing world when he retired. His son followed his father in writing novels with similar themes.
A friend was surprised that I’m reading books like this when awake at night, but they seem to work better at helping me get back to sleep than soothing music, milky drinks and essential lavender oil.

I've read Dick Francis, many years ago. I didn't know his son wrote books. Jenny Pitman also wrote a few good books based in the horse racing world.

www.amazon.co.uk/What-have-done-deserve-this/dp/B0BRTGS6TJedit. Having read the first twenty pages of the slim volume I was a bit disappointed. what starts as a clever take on the U.K. media then becomes simply a list of headlines placed in alphabetical order. one could spend one’s time searching for their significance on the net to add some sort of context. I use that word deliberately with emphasis on the con. This must represent the poorest value in the world for reading material. I am in a bit of a spot. It was a birthday present from a very good friend. Although sometimes our sense of humour is similar, I don’t know what to say about the book. I am a yesterday man If I ever really get stuck for something to do I might try searching the lines. Highly unlikely.

Wyrd Sisters, Terry Pratchett. Again. Breaking my own rule about only reading French books, but the puns just aren't the same in a foreign language.

Are you reading it Again , or are you Again breaking your own rules ? I love Terry Pratchett , he was a very clever man . I think I have more than 20 of his books on the shelf.

Reading it for what must be the 50th time Same for all his books......they've got me through many a grim Aquitaine winter, along with Tom Holt and Julian May I did try a couple of French translations of TP, and Good Omens, which wasn't bad, but they just lose too many cultural references and too much word play.
