Does not the hospital supply a translator? I would imagine for legal reasons (theirs) that they would.

I haven’t and have had a lot of experience of in and outpatient visits over the years. But I’ve acted as a translator in hospitals a number of times.

I have never been in a french hospital in my 15 years there but here in Spain they do have and provide translators at all hospitals; at least here on the east coast from the valencian community south to malaga.

UPDATE: My OH has today come out of hospital after 12 days following the cementing of vertebrae. He came home flat on his back by ambulance. He thought that he had one or two vertebrae cemented by keyhole but the photo the nurse took, shows a whole lot more. Googling on the internet at the beginning made it sound like a simple op, which it may have been in complexity but not in number or recovery. He has staples most of the way down his back. Recovery is going to take a while - he is not allowed in a car as driver or passenger for 4 weeks. The moral of the story is we don't bounce as well as we used to. As a pointer, during the time in hospital he didn't have data on his phone or take up the offer of wifi, so was out of touch with many whilst laid up.
Hopefully, FFS has similarly been taking time out to recover from his back problems. Here's hoping all is well.

I was so pleased to read that your husband is back home with you after his operation, staples et al. Sending my best wishes for his recovery. You’re so right about us not bouncing as well as we used to. I hope very much that FFS has been out of circulation for a similar reason as your husband while having back treatment - he’s very much missed.

I hope he makes a full recovery.

It has also made me realise how dependent I have become like not bothering with driving because I don't enjoy it.These last couple of weeks, I have had to get on with stuff and am even a better pyromaniac than him now!

This year we 'retired' from our French work (hosting French students for English immersion) to make sure we got as much as possible done on the house and garden before we got too old (64 this year), but most of that will have to be put off until next year if he is fit enough.

Hope he makes a full recovery.
Your point about being in touch with other people is a main reason for having a smart phone in this day and age.

We do have smartphones but have a basic tarif and have laptops at home.Generally, we don't find it necessary to use the phone for everything. This was an exception. He was quite happy reading and doing crossword puzzles and using the phone for talking.

All the best. He must have come down with a hell of a thud. Poor thing.

Fingers crossed he progresses well. Health is such a fragile thing. Without it you have nothing.
