Advertising is a big business, but does it work? I see many adverts, particularly on the TV, and I wonder whether they work and how they can verify the effectiveness. Some car and beer adverts are look very costly to make but is it worthwhile?
Any experts out there?

I was born and raised in the US. That makes me an expert at recognising and ignoring the "hard sell". My family used to reach for the mute button on the TV remote as soon as the ads came on. I can mentally switch off my hearing if there is no mute button. You are correct in assuming the ads are expensive but there must be some way of writing at least part of the cost against taxes. Someone somewhere must be convinced that the constant drip feed of advertising for stuff no one really needs will work to some extent. Certainly 52% of the UK public are unable to think clearly for themselves and distinguish truth from bullshit.

TV advertising works and is carefully monitored. Agencies have consumer panels that they use to see the effects of advertising campaigns. Also social media data is "mined" to evaluate the effects of adverts. TV advertising is expensive and the merchants would not be spending the money without proof of the impact to the bottom line. Of course there is the famous quote " My company spends £100m a year on marketing, half of it is effective. The problem is I don't know which half"

We do not do any advertising - Amazon and alibaba product listings work well enough, Facebook, Twitter & IG posts are free but we do use google adsense which provides us with a very good monthly income and has done for the last 10+ years.

Somebody once remarked that 50% of his advertising budget was a waste - but he didn't know which 50%

I suspect we all think we are too savvy to be taken in by adverts, but obviously as companies spend lots of money they wouldn’t do that if it didn’t work. I do Yougov surveys and they often ask if I’ve seen certain products advertised, if it’s for a car then definitely no, as it’s not something I’m remotely interested in, I have noticed on the run up to Mother’s Day lots of perfume adverts, but ask me to name one, no I can’t. I’m much more likely to be interested by an actual TV programme, I was intending to have curry yesterday, then I watched a recording of Marcus Wareing cooking duck breast so I had that instead.

In my limited experience, companies have a marketing budget, which they are expected to spend.
I suspect the reason we get those lavish glossy adverts is that the marketing guys have the money available.
Not sure why crashing waves would make me drink Guinness, or a horse running on a beach would make me swap to Lloyds Bank

Not sure why crashing waves would make me drink Guinness, or a horse running on a beach would make me swap to Lloyds Bank Landmannn, you've just picked two ads that I remember most well, because I have a real interest in horses. The Guinness ads with the fabulous white horses (Camargues I think) are imprinted on my mind and I strongly associate them with Guinness. But I don't like Guinness and I wouldn't be persuaded to buy it. All the Lloyds ads with those beautiful Friesian horses catch my attention, but although I know exactly which bank to associate with them, I continue to bank with the same high street bank I have dealt with since leaving school.

You are clearly not one of the "easily led" that they are trying to influence.
Mrs. A and myself often ask each other what it is they are trying to sell. Often we can't guess before the end of the ad. Sometimes we watch it several times and still haven't a clue what they're getting at.
I'm pretty sure the advertising budget is spent on cocaine for the "creative" types at the agency.

Or they spend the lot on cocaine first and then have nothing left to fund the ad and come up with the most inane, meaningless rubbish, like some 3rd rate 'The Apprentice' team. I cannot stand the ones with that Welsh singer (turned ham actor) on the Go Compare ads.

Quality ads I think are a thing of the past. Guiness yes, but also Cadbury's gorilla on the drums, a few of the Carlsberg ads, and of course Peter Kay...

I've heard of Jack the Tipper, but that doesn't mean I'd want to meet him.
