After 21 years we have decided to employ a chimney sweep to clean the log burner chimney. After several aborted attempts to find a local person we have resorted to using a man who will travel 50km to our house. He has quoted an all-in price of 150€ and apologised for the high price explain he had make the long return journey. The only price comparisons I could find are nine or ten years old and are between 75 and 100€. With inflation I would expect a substantial increase in that time. I would welcome any thoughts from members who have recently paid for a chimney sweep. Is it likely that the sweep would dismantle the log burner to access the lined flue or is it expected that I would do this before he or she arrives?

Certainly in the U.K. the sweeper would dismantle the log burner, he did here.

We still pay the same price to have our insert fire flue swept we have for years and years and years. Although ours is not a stand alone wood burner the sweep still has to dismantle parts inside the fire to access the flue. Our only input is to clean out the debris as usual before he arrives. We pay 79€ .. he comes about 30km but he groups quite a few clients together in our vicinity in one day, so he doesn't make a special journey just for us.

We had a the wood stove and chimney/ flue clean just before Xmas. Cost 75euros and traveled 30km. For this year he will do both ours and my French neighbour one after the other. She used him originally and booked both. Everything left clean and tidy.

We paid about €75 last year. The guy is local and usually does the neighbours after us. I take all the bits out of the stove and put them back.He used to sweep down the flue which was good as all the muck stayed in the stove to be vacuumed. Now as he is a bit older he sweeps up the flue which can get a bit messy.

We're in the region in of 150 for two - it's 80 for one chimney. ours travels a fair way - but she groups people so you simply work around when she'll be around. A previous one started to ask for 50 on top for travel. We're deep 23 so trades sort of have to travel to have a business

Thanks for all your helpful replies. It certainly looks like we are being charged well over the norm. Maybe my wife will think again about using this man.

After 21 years we have decided to employ a chimney sweep to clean the log burner chimney. I would not care how much it costs. 21 years? I am surprised it has not caught fire...
I have known people do it twice a burning season...

You are not that far from us, on the border of 23 and 36. Thanks.

I must have another hunt for my sweep brushes. Lost track of them last year.

When we moved in I found a complete sweep set in the grenier but have not used them. I think the brush is for an unlined chimney so I should look for a lining brush. We have burnt a few chimney cleaning logs and I have been able to view the flue from below as it is a straight run and it looks clear. Our salon is due to be decorated very soon and my wife wanted to get the chimney cleaned before the decorating.
