Just got my plan renewal (out of contract) letter from Three UK.........
On the back of the letter in the small print, it now says all new contracts will have a £2 daily charge per sim for the Go Roam data allowance, I asked of that would apply to my renewal and he said yes, he advised me to stay on the contract I was on and the charge would not apply, I replied politely, if that charge was ever applied to any account of mine, I would be leaving........It would be cheaper for me just to add a data bundle to my French SIM

Have a look at Smarty. It's the no frills arm of 3 but I believe includes EU roaming within your allowance.

Call me suspicious/sceptical but I recon that is a ruse to get people to leave their contracts on Three, go to Smarty, then Smarty change their T&C to also charge a daily £2 rate, then you have lost your existing contract with Three........

Your post is confusing. If you are renewing you must be out of contract so how can you stay on it to keep "free" roaming. A new contract will have a roaming charge whoever you go to.
Smarty is not a contract but is a rolling 30 day arrangement which can be paused at any time without cost. I have one, currently paused, but it can be reactivated at whatever amount of GB I require.
If you have a dual sim phone - add another sim for calls to the UK.
Try 1p mobile (which uses EE) which it still permits roaming.
£10 top up every 4 months gives - calls 1p min - texts 1p - 1MB data 1p with data add ons if needed.
Edit: If I recommend you we both get a £5 top up added.

Are there any cheap no-contract deals that are bare bones? I don't need roaming and I don't need any data allowance. It would only be to receive the cursed security codes that are becoming the norme lately. I don't even need free calls or texts.

Three UK allow you to remain 'out of contract' on the same deal and price for as long as you want, they don't insisit you must take out a new one, it just means as prices drop, you end up paying more reletavley speaking.......Mine is relatively cheap, so will just stay for now......
