Twice now we have seen an otter in the Plan d'eau here, is that quite common in France or not ?

Are you sure it's an otter and not a coypu. It could be, it was too far away and in the water to see........ |

Looks like a Ragondin, common in many places here and is a bit of a pest.

My money's on coypu too, which are not at all uncommon. Unfortunately.
Otters numbers in France on the other hand have been estimated to barely reach 1,500 left in the wild for the whole country.

It would be lovely if it were an otter, but a spiny rat is much more likely, as others have said.

More than twenty years ago I spotted my first “otter” in our plan d’eau. My wise friend told me of their family experiences sailing down the Lot and seeing otters everywhere. He then explained that they soon discovered that they were in fact coypu.
I am still disappointed!

It's an easy mistake. My advice? You otter tarka second look.

Saw one today just outside its den on the riverbank quite close up before it scarpered inside, too small to be an otter, so just a Coypu......how disappointing
