@ Rabbit, your hedge cutter, was it connected to an earthed plug, 2 or 3 wire cable? Making a short between live and neutral, if quick enough, doesn't always trigger a MCB, especially not when there is some resistance of long cables. It will however hard to beat the speed of an interrupteur différentiel.

My hedge trimmer has no earth connection, but then neither does drill!

I checked its plug and the live was disconnected from the terminal.
How did you access the plug? Oh, maybe I know, an english drill and you changed the plug to fit your French outlet?
Glad it is resolved without ripping the walls out.

If the hedge trimmer is double insulated there is no earth wire, so the ID cannot detect a current going to earth - would be my best guess.

I suspect that the blades cut through the individual conductors one at a time without any bridging so the id would have no reason to trip. I have done this a few times and the only result was a chopped cable. The rcd and fuse were not affected. Just very lucky!
Sorry, just read the other posts that seem to cover the question so ignore this one. Where did they come from?
On page two I expect and I jumped in. Too old and slow. Would not make the Olympics in this condition.
