Pine processionary caterpillars. DANGEROUS. Keep pets away and do not touch. Google them.

Check out your garden .. they have their 'nests' in pine or oak trees. This is now the time they decide to descend from their cosy abode(s) and go walkabout. If you find a nest .. carefully get it down then drop it in a rubbish sack .. preferably a new one with no holes in .. tie it up very tightly and either hang it somewhere on your land until the occupants are dead or ring your Mairie and someone might come and collect it.
Horrible horrible things and v dangerous to inquisitive dogs/cats.

Or do as Sue suggests and then put it in the freezer. They won't survive that any more than Asian Hornets do.

One works Christmas meal a few years ago now there was a cooked pigs head at the head of the table, at the end of the evening it was still there left untouched so I asked if I could 'have a doggy bag' to take it home for enjoyment the next day, when I woke up next day I was bemused as to what was in the black bin bag in the fridge.........and I got the train home the night before with said bag

Mind you I thought you were going to say the pig's head proved to be an imitation one .. for display purposes only.

If I saw the procession in my garden I'd reach for a blowlamp and deal with it pronto!

We used to have a guy come around November time, he had a van which had a powerful jet spray and he would spray up into our pine trees which soaked the nests and killed them. it used to cost around €60-€70 a time, but we never had any processions the following spring. This year we had about 6-8 large processions over a couple of weeks, I sprayed them with Raid (fly spray) which soon broke up the trains, I then scooped them up with a garden spade and put them in a bucket and dumped them on the ashes of a garden bonfire. Now, I just got to sort out the moles, we have literally loads of molehills dotted around our garden. We have a Taupier coming on Monday to gas them.
