I have been using only AZERTY keyboards from day 1 in France, soon to be 17 years (how time flys!) I would freak out having to use a Qwerty again and would not be able to write any accents.
OK I know there are many ways to type accents with a QWERTY keyboard but all of them slow and complicated, for me now typing an accent is just like typing another letter which for é, è and à it is exactly that for the circonflex one more keystroke which often does not work if I am typing fast.

I had to get my laptop keyboard replaced and only azerty ones could be found by the local repair shop so I said go ahead. It's handy because as mentioned above, the accents are easily typed. Not that I type them very often since I mostly type in English. I find it easy as long as I don't look, because I can touch type quite fast on a qwerty layout so I just added the UK keyboard layout in Windows language preferences and set it as the default and carry on as normal, only switching to the French one if I need to type in French. I agree if you don't touch type and need to look at the keys it might get confusing.

When I was working, at one stage I had a German AZERTY keyboard, A French AZERTY and a UK QWERTY.
Of the three the German one was the best with direct access to umlauted letters as well as French accented ones (I cannot remember if the cedilla was there or not) as well as the numbers being on the lower case register - and remember that computers were there to do hard sums first not post on forums.

My son used to have azerty and qwerty for his desktop pc but when the qwerty one broke he just stuck with the azerty one and changes the language if he needs to, like I do. The azerty one is more useful in France.

Welcome to France Johnny .. you did say you wanted to retire here, didn't you ? Well this keyboard thing has really put a question mark on it.......if i could find it on this keyboard Another thing you could try if you can't touch type and need visual confirmation of the keys is to have the display keyboard on, if you're using Windows, and only click on it when you can't find what you're looking for. I did that for a while when my keys started wearing out and not working right, before I decided too many were gone and it was too awkward using a separate keyboard and splashed out on a new keyboard. So change the default keyboard layout to the UK one in language preferences but have the display keyboard open in case you can't find the key when you need to look at the actual keyboard.

Display keyboard, never heard of that, if only you had told me sooner, I have spent years peering myopically trying to find the ç, the hash key (still cant see it!!!) and a couple of others I cannot recall.
How do you switch on "display keyboard"?
I miss the numeric keypad from my old, very old now, desktop computer keyboard.

I believe not all French people speak or understand English EVEN WHEN SPOKEN SLOWLY AND LOUDLY, drive on the wrong side and don't rush up to you to thank you for D-day. You can't even get the Daily Mail delivered each morning!

I must say that when we lived in Burgundy I knew the shortcuts for accents and so forth but couldn't for the life of me do an acute or whatever now. Mind you, in those days almost everything was done by post so I'd often cheat by printing off my letter and adding the accents with a pen. Is that just too lazy, or what?

Quick route is just type osk in your search bar and you'll see the onscreen keyboard app come up and just choose to open it. It looks like the screenprint shown in the attachment below Attachments:
