As I posted on the other forum, this is only half a news story and not down to just Brexit.
I had a presentation from one of the leading German haulier companies over 10 years ago about the European driver shortage and how the average age of drivers was going up about half a year every 12 months - indicating the lack of new blood entering the industry.
It is a very complex problem with most males wanting to be in bed every night with their wife/girlfriend or whomsoever, rather than on the road. This has led to a significant increase in intermodal traffic - either swap bodies (where the body of the truck or the full trailer are loaded onto a rail wagon) or containers - which are now in worldwide short supply. Drivers then operate close to home at either the loading end or the final delivery end. Just to put the problem into context back in the mid noughties I had a dispirited driver turn up at out Frankfurt works. He had not been back to his home country (let alone home town) for 3 months - being shuttled back and forward, up and down and across Europe, weekends in a layby living out of the truck cab.... No wonder young drivers are not attracted to the profession.
Now add Covid. What Romanian, Lithuanian, Polish driver would want to come to the UK with its soaring case levels just to make a delivery, let alone to sign up for a UK haulage company?
There is no doubt that Brexit has made a difficult situation very bad and that Covid has added the lead lining to the problem but this problem has been coming for years and not just for the UK.

Whilst I don’t disagree with what you say exile, this government knew all about Covid and the damage it was likely to cause, yet still it sought to execute Brexit during the height of this pandemic, even after being offered an extension, there really was no need to do that, a lot of this could have been made a much easier with a normal sensible government in charge………..they knowingly put us into a more isolated cut off situation, and I for one will hold them accountable for the rest of my life……….

I guess everyone here is fully "integrated" and so didn't watch the Dominic Cummings interview this evening on BBC2. You got a good impression of the sort of savage he really is, and an even clearer image of how totally useless imbecile Bojo is. Not to mention the rest of the morons at the top. The word morons was used during the interview.

I held a heavy goods licence until my mid 30s. It's at times like this I regret having let it lapse. Aye right.

True Ally.
A friend of ours was a oil/petrol tanker driver a few years back and I still am in awe of the responsibility he had.
Later, I had the stupidity of having to advise on Class 7 Dangerous Goods Transport which confirmed my awe.
Still don't fully understand the ullage bit apart from the fact that the tanker could have to have a certain volume of content. It has no relvance to my interest though.
Edit : not few but many.

Maybe if people consume less it would help!👹 Good luck consuming your beer (not sure about the transportation of hops though), potatoes, sugar, bread, a bit of pork, beef and maybe chicken and not a lot else. That does not sound like a healthy diet to me. Salads - Holland or South France/ Spain Wine - well not near you, that's for sure. Petrol/Diesel - Notre Dame de Gravenchon or Mons Bottled water - if that is your thing - Your choice but not near you I suggest. Oils - rape seed might just be local, sunflower less likely and olive oil or peanut oil just forget . Timber for construction? Plasterboard or plaster? And your car, household electrical goods, even you electricity was made where? Not chez vous I suspect.

Yes, exile, I was largely joking. But if people bought less and wasted less they would be healthier and better off. after all, how many different types of yoghurt, cheese and lettuce do they really need?

It is a lot lot more complicated than that. You can't compare European logistics operations with UK logistics operations. They are very very different. The service and physical demands in the UK are very different. Whilist there might be an overall shortage of drivers in the UK, there is probably more a shortage of 'good' lorry drivers. It is very easy to drive a truck. Being a lorry driver is very different. A good driver can do twice the work as a bad/unexperienced lorry driver. Brexit is a small inconvenience but it is not the cause of the problems in the UK.
