Morning all
We want to remove the pillar ajoining our boundry wall at the front of the house, whilst the defender was a tight squeeze (which we now don't have) the golf is even tighter, so want to lose the granite pillar and make good the wall........
Do we neeed permission from the Mairie in the village, and given its on a public footpath, do we need to take any measures of safety ie bollard the pavement or such like?

JD, I wouldn't have given it a second thought, it is your pillar and you are going to make good the wall, go for it. p.s I will visit you if you end up in jail Or if you haven't already met your local Maire, arm yourself with some pics and dimensions and a pic of the car squeezing through and it would be a good way to introduce yourself and show what a considerate person you are.

It seems purely decorative and not too pretty so dump it, but check it does not hold up the wall in some way eg having metal chains or rods through it. If on your land, it is yours and the mayor has nothing to say ( n’a rien à dire).

When we moved into our humble abode, the gateway was only wide enough for a horse and carriage. Trouble was that it has solid granite pillars in two sections and 3 m high and 80cm square (about a ton each section). While the roofers were working I got them to do the lifting with their teleworker. I did it the French way, if you ask, you may not achieve your goal because of someone's interpretation of rules, just get on with it as I did. I moved mine back 5 m up the drive and widened it to 5 m to allow the furniture container lorry to get through. I later got the local blacksmith to extend the wrought iron gates to my design complimentary to the original gate. The locals all liked it ( that's the like as in " it's nice" and not the electronic thumbs up). There has been no complaints even though the pillar was used as a marker in the cadaster. I left the wall where the pillar stood so as not to remove the cadaster mark as it is not in the way.

Most Mairies will wonder why you are wasting their time , your land, your drive , your costs . It's not like the UK. I had the same problem on arrival , but have got used to the system. Do the job , they won't worry about it until someone complains !
Take care about going to the mairie to discuss it , they may not like " étrangères" , our commune voted for MLP !

I will be replacing my front fence in time (it's pants) fitting a sliding electric gate & maybe replacing the pillars as they are too far apart, I have yet to meet the Maire but in his place I met with the adjoint résponsable pour la voirie and learned that the position of my fence line and all the others are incorrect, they are on our boundaries but its a single track road and the fences should be 4.4m (I think) from the road centre line to allow passing vehicles to ride up the verges, there is room but not the reglementary space. It seems to be a very old can of worms and I think the emnity between past controlling clans plays its part, he made it very clear that when I came to replace the chain link fence that I would have to submit a demande de réalignement which I am pretty sure would be refused and maybe even force all the neighbours to move theirs, I am not going to get into all that so I will do it in parts as "maintenance" and if challenged pretend that I did not understand him. A long posting but it's to give another reason why as has been stated sometimes its better not to ask, the huge appentis on the side of the building (an open hangar) also did not have permission and he was urging me to regularise the situation, once again no way as it would be refused in its current form. As an aside it shows how "Supersize me!" the modern world has become when a VW Golf is wider than a Land Rover Defender

Yes, that comparison of the two vehicles had me scratching my head.

As did the mention of modern vehicles being 25% lighter due to plastics!
I will address that on the actual thread.

The pillar is clearly constructed of modern, hollow blocks. We knocked down both our pillars of similar type and replaced them with chunky oak pillars further apart. We are out of the way so didn’t even consider asking for permission. Just knock it down but be ready to manage a steel bar reinforced structure which will be very heavy.

If it comes to it, the mayor will just make you tear down the new pillar and pay a fine.. Then they will probably forbid you to build a new one.

Its solid granite blocks, I know that because there are two of them in the back garden with a slab of marble across them to make a garden seat.......
