OH went for a hospital audiology appointment last week (for which he'd had to wait 4 months), only to find the consultant was off sick - thanks for letting us know. He cannot get another appointment until the end of July.
Is a consultant's appointment absolutely necessary? Can one go to an audiology clinic - such as many opticians seem to have and get hearing tests done in order to get hearing aids prescribed? We feel he needs hearing aids but want dependable tests done before opting for any appliances.

A hearing centre can test Biggles but, if he needs hearing aids, then he will need his hearing professionally tested by an Audiologiste and an 'ordonnance' issued There are quite a few audiologists around .. Biggles doesn't need to go to a Hospital.
Once a prescription is issued then tweaks can be done to it by a local hearing centre .. just like your local optician can tweak a prescription for glasses issued by an ophtalmologue.
Edit : The above is what OH went through to acquire his hearing aids .. I hope this is still current.

Just like at a laboratory to have blood tests done or an eye clinic to have your eyes tested, you just can walk in, get tested and pay on your way out...
A google search of "Confolens, audiologists" brought up many, many...

Sue's info is still correct If the audiologue confirms severe hearing loss, it would be worth asking about his eligibility for help for a subvention via the local MDPH. An application can take anything up to 4 months to be processed. The basic-level aids (free) are very basic and old-fashioned....think NHS 20 years ago. The newer, more efficient and sophisticated ones are very expensive!

I don't know if you are right or wrong but this is what happened in my case. I had hearing aids since before moving here (NHS). I was tested at a shop (audition sante). They told me to take the results and get an ordnance from my doctor and then I received my new aids. They are the "free ones", fully refunded at 900€ each, which are much better than my previous 2 year old NHS ones, smaller, batteries longer life. Like the nhs ones not much control but they are more comfortable, much clearer and the big bonus for me is music sounds like music.
I understand that the free ones are not strong enough for severe loss but more than adequate otherwise. The store has a range that are much more expensive and beyond my budget when all I want is to hear clearly.
Just to add this was within the last 2 years, the store offers regular check ups and has acted on any problems free of charge and tweeks as necessary.

OH is undergoing this process now. Ordonnance from MT for test - yes he did have to wait 3 months for the appointment with an audiologist (not at the hospital) but with an audiologist in St Junien town, which we made direct. He has the results and a certificate to take to a shop, choice of about 6 in St Junien. Appointment made - a wait of 2 weeks. So we go later this week to see how it works from there and what the budget allows. According to the Mutuelle, we will get a choice of completely 100% covered by carte vitale and other partially covered by cv and top up. I don't think we have high cover on top up, although I believe the cover by cv has been upped in the last year.
Whilst researching 'the shops' it looks like you can book with them direct but I'm not sure how much is covered with/ without an ordonnance. It may be worth ringing and asking what the procedure is.

4 Pharmacies in Saint Junien, there is also a hospital that is good too. The people in the Limousin live longer than many other areas in France , one reason being the clean air.

Thanks for all your helpful responses. We'll get on with it, but with la grande vacance approaching, he might have to wait quite a long time.

@ Veem - It may be worth going to the audiologist store direct. OH had his rdv this morning, after having seen the Dr recommended one. At the store, they completed their own thorough hearing tests, which OH said were the same as he had already done. We discussed the cost and type of appliance. There were three completely covered by CV and mutuelle. Two behind the ear and one in the ear type. These were all priced the same. The difference between these and those not fully covered was the technology inside. Our mutualle cover only offered a very small amount to the not fully covered ones. But as our way of life doesn't have the need for precise sounds,he opted for a fully covered model. A mould was taken and he returns in 2 weeks for fitting.

Thank you Ll. Life suddenly became a bit hectic this week, so we still haven't got any further, but what you've said is definitely worth knowing. Was it an audiologiste that may be close enough to us? St Junien is easily manageable.
