To avoid hijacking the hearing test thread...........
What is the procedure for getting an eye test? My old free Tesco eye test is now quite a few years old and my specs are giving me severe eye strain now. The consensus of opinion is that I would have to apply somewhere and wait up to 6 months for a test. There seem to be any number of "optician" type shops in the towns. Can they not do a test quicker than that? I asked my doctor and he didn't give me much hope or specific information. He did, however write me some sort of prescription and said to try showing it at one of these shops and see if it would help.

It must depend on where you live .. we have an Ophtalmologue in our small town so we ring up and get an appt in a couple of weeks. She issues a prescription which we then use in one of the myriad of Opticians to choose the specs of our choice.

Many optians will arrange tests for you and sell you the lunettes, however, you will have to pay everything yourself, you will not be able to claim anything on your insurance and mutuelle. An appointment with a specialist will take months and if you have cataracts, it could take a year for an op. Mrs PE is still waiting since October 2021 for the appointment for an op, but has in the meantime taken advantage of our Dutch health system and made a trip to NL to get it sorted. We will have great pleasure in rejecting any French op appointment, when and if it comes.

Better to tell them now that she has had the operation so that they can move someone else up the list and they will have more notice.

We tried, but cannot find out where she would be sent. And the optologist has since retired.

Shurly shome mishtake here?
In Limoux we have a multitude of glasses places. One recently opened, The Optical Centre, that I quite liked the look of. I decided it was maybe time to get my eyes tested as one is a bit blurry on long distance, popped in and they gave me an appt the next day for a test, produced my carte Vitale and no charge for the test. However half way through the test she stopped and refused to continue! Made a call to someone and a week later saw an ophthalmic medic who Sid that she was right to stop as 99% of the issue is a cataract...
So why is everyone waiting? As I understand it, you visit one of these shops who give you a test. You then take the results to your GP who gives you a prescription to go back to the test place with carte Vitale and mutuelle, after which it is calculated how much you pay... I have never heard anyone here not getting it all done quickly...

That is surely progress .. which, hopefully, will help cut down on the long waiting lists to see an Ophthalmologue which exists in some areas.

I think a lot depends on whether A is in the system and under what terms...CSS ( formerly CMU-C) or mutuelle etc. If you've no top-up, your quickest, cheapest route is to turn up in your local hospital's Urgences (with worrying symptoms 😉) and get checked out by the resident ophthalmologist. Opticians, as in UK, don't do a thorough test. They're just there to sell specs.

That is surely progress .. which, hopefully, will help cut down on the long waiting lists to see an Ophthalmologue which exists in some areas. OK, this is an opportune thread then to cite my situation: ten days ago, I visited one of these shops in Limoux. Half way through the free exam, she refused to go any further but told me to see an opthalmogue. Made an rev for today - 7 days after calling the hospital. RDV at 14.30. I had to wait ten minutes, then an eye exam from a young lady, then another test by another young lady, then the doctor took over, quickly told me cataracts etc etc and a risk if left etc etc. he sent me to his secretary who had all the paperwork ready for an rdv with an anaethetist on July 19, an operation date of 18 August for one eye and 1 Sept for the other. I left the hospital at 15.40. In an hour, a diagnosis and date for surgery, all without any fuss in a clean environment and no parking charges in the hospital car park! Compare this with the NHS where the paperwork will be lost, and a minimum wait of two years, and when finally it is all done, you go out to find your car clamped A good time to make a point that brexitland has it all wrong and France at least has it half right: In brexitland, I have a house in the Cotswolds that is appreciating at an alarming rate that I am refusing offers on. This in a country where the NHS is pretty awful with people waiting in corridors and in dying in ambulances. In France, I struggle to get a valuation on my property substantially more than I paid, despite spending a king's ransom to modernise it (btw, I am not complaining...) yet there are two hospitals nearby fully staffed by home grown medics, with two helicopters, a plethora of ambulances, and no one waiting or dying in corrodors. As the ad says, you do the math! And my friends marvel that I never want to set foot in brexitland again

I have an annual visit to my Opthalmo and don't have to wait long for an appointment. My glasses I get at Ecouter Voir with the prescription from the Opthalmo and they cost me nothing. An extra pair is I think 30€. If I recall getting into the system to be seen to start with was about six months.

After reading all the responses to my query I am no nearer a solution. Clearly it is either a postcode lottery or too many variables to give a simple answer. OH has decided to book a day trip over to UK and get a free test in Tesco or somewhere to get a prescription and order cheap specs from Zennioptical upon her return. I don't have an up to date passport so I'll stay here and play whatever game I have to and just wait. It would be nice to pin down the cost before hand though.

hal, re your post at 6.29pm, I think it's yet another case of postcode lottery and luck; I had to wait 9 months for my first opthalmo appointment, but with the prescription things went very quickly and I have 6-monthly updates (except for the last one a month ago which I missed for reasons out of my control).

Despite this being worzle gummage country, I definitely think we are in some form of 'go fast' experiment being conducted on us. I have marvelled at many threads where medical attention is not what we experience here. I think the longest wait I have had was my last check up with a cardiologist which took three and a half months to book...

Opticians and audio places have to provide one, or several, devis.

You say Worzel Gummage country but that really doesn't help much.
