I love walking in France but frequently get lost and spend hours trying to get back to where I started, I discovered there are a bunch of apps available to download onto a phone to help guide you around and some are free. So far so good.
Except you need to load a gpx file of the walk. Here is the problem. Where do you get the gpx file? Help please you techno wizards.

You say you can't get back to where you started. If you use something like Strava and start it recording at the beginning of your walk, you can use it to retrace your steps. No need to download a gpx file.

If you download Komoot on your phone you can plan the route before you set off.
Slightly fiddly but you plot way points and it routes to each.
Once the route has been planned you can save the route offline and your phone will give you sat nav style directions.
And it is free!

Google gave Google Maps an update, late 2019, with walking instructions as a new option. I'll give it a try next time when I go out for walking.

If you are in a city or village, then the google maps walking "directions" are very good.. In the woods, who knows...
Maybe the OP needs to leave breadcrumbs or other markers so they do not get lost...

I've started using map my walk but Google maps is surprisingly good for the chemins. I've worked out most of the variations available around us from Google maps. Mapmywalk shows the trace of where you've been so I guess it's easier to retrace your route. You don't need to download anything but I guess you need data on during the walk. Most of the apps that download OS type maps are pay sites - you don't get free downloads of maps bar Google.

If you dont have a smartphone, dont want to carry it phone during a walk or perhaps the battery wont be up to all the work then a Garmin GPS watch has a function to take you back to your start point.
It's fairly basic and simply shows you the correct direction at all times but usually that is all that people are lacking.
A map and a compass cannot be beaten and are my choice but less and less people seem to be capable of using either these days.

No need for batteries or charging points either.

Not the bozzocks, the mapping, especially if it can be used offline. I don't have any sense of direction at all, honestly, no idea. In a strange town I park the car and then can't find it. I'm not sure what a "way point" is, but up for finding out. Do I have to be a member of komoot to use it offlne?

Were none of you boy scouts? Me neither, but moss grows on the north side of trees, if the sun is out and you have an idea of the time then you can fix South, if it is dark, but the stars are out, you can find North. Loads of landmarks, study the map of the area before you set off, study the contours of the hills. Nobody should get lost. I used these indicators on a wild forest walk in Sweden and after a long day, found my way home without backtracking. On a ride out in the devil's dust bowl (near Hazelmere), I didn't need any of this as the horse knew the way home as I discovered when he broke into a gallop to get home faster when I turned unsuspectingly in the direction of the stables.
