You can download google maps for any location.
The walking maps are free in France from your local tourist centre.

If you download Komoot on your phone you can plan the route before you set off. Slightly fiddly but you plot way points and it routes to each. Once the route has been planned you can save the route offline and your phone will give you sat nav style directions. And it is free! Hey landmannnn that sounds the dogs bozzocks and is what I need. Not the bozzocks, the mapping, especially if it can be used offline. I don't have any sense of direction at all, honestly, no idea. In a strange town I park the car and then can't find it. I'm not sure what a "way point" is, but up for finding out. Do I have to be a member of komoot to use it offlne? Pretty sure, just download the app to your phone and have a play.

Were none of you boy scouts? Me neither, but moss grows on the north side of trees, if the sun is out and you have an idea of the time then you can fix South, if it is dark, but the stars are out, you can find North. Loads of landmarks, study the map of the area before you set off, study the contours of the hills. Nobody should get lost. I used these indicators on a wild forest walk in Sweden and after a long day, found my way home without backtracking. On a ride out in the devil's dust bowl (near Hazelmere), I didn't need any of this as the horse knew the way home as I discovered when he broke into a gallop to get home faster when I turned unsuspectingly in the direction of the stables. Devil's Punch bowl , at Hindhead . Where I learned orienteering with the scouts ( my neck of the woods when young)
My sister lived in Haslemere.

I imagine a lot of people get lost while out on a ramble because they are mostly gawping at their phone instead of taking note of landmarks, etc.

Sorry to do something as weird as answering your question, but here's a description of what a .gpx file is (and is for): getoutside.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/guides/what-is-a-gpx-file/If you get a GPS Editor app - many are available - one option is that you plan your route and upload it to your phone.

Surely that must be against the forum code of conduct!
