Taken from a site on FB
About a month ago, we sold our (French registered) car that we have owned from new to a buyer, with the full 20 years of service history, a fresh MOT (contrôle technique), and no known faults. The car worked perfectly fine when it left us. The buyer has contacted us this evening with the clutch pedal no longer working, and requesting that we pay half costs for whatever the repair bill will end up being. They mentioned that "there are laws" that require us to participate.
While I understand the frustration of the buyer, we didn't sell this car with a warranty, and couldn't have known about the fault.
Can anyone advise me on what our obligations are in this instance?
Regards

No idea on the French laws, but it is a standard trick in the UK to get money off the car.

There's something called a vice cache I think. Lots of French try it on with les etrangers hoping for a sucker with lots of money. In fact if he wants to press the issue it will cost him more money than a new clutch in legal fees. Tell him to go forth and multiply.

Sold with a full controle technique is all you can do, you aren't a mechanic, the guy is trying it on, in my opinion of course.Maybe ask for a written report from an expert at their cost and see what reaction you get.

Always the same problems here in France with the (in)famous viche caché, how to make some money. A summary in French of the legal aspects.

We had an intermittent auto box problem on her Bmw years ago it could drive fine for a day then go into safety mode. Switch off the car re start and good as new. It had been in and out of Bmw dealers a few times and they could not find the fault. If we sold the car without telling the new owner we knew it had a fault and he went back to the bmw garage where it had been they could then possibly have a claim.

I'm betting VAG, 6 speed gearbox and concentric slave cylinder post 2012, I have the T shirt.
Every one is a vice caché waiting to happen

Concentric slave cylinder installations appear to be common place now with a number of manufacturers opting for this design. While they're working they're fine, but when they start acting up ££££££££! And it's no fun trying to remove a Ford Ranger gearbox without garage facilities!
"Clutch pedal not working" is the clue to a high probability the CSC is on its way out.

"Clutch pedal not working" is the clue to a high probability the CSC is on its way out. On the assumption that we are talking about VAG then that may be what the garage says and what is replaced at great cost but it will not have been "on it's way out" simply a rubbish design where they went from a cast alloy one piece component to a two piece plastic one, all that fails is the sealing O ring between the two parts which is worth less than 1ct, however having removed the transmission which in my case included the 4x4 transfer box nobody is going to put the old cylinder back, I managed to find a new old stock original alloy one, no way do I intend removing a 68kg lump again. I replaced the clutch, dual mass flywheel and concentric slave cylinder, cost of parts was €300 which included giving away the plastic CSC that came in the clutch kit and buying a new old stock alloy one. Labour costs zero, a slow and considered 5 hours work spread over 2 days, done using a small inspection pit.

If over a period of time, I have an intermittent problem of the clutch pedal not returning until finally I lose the clutch operation, in my book I call that as something being 'on its way out' and that is irrespective of whether its VAG, Ford, Mercedes, JLR, etc.

"Something" being on the way out is somewhat different to what you said previously. "Clutch pedal not working" is the clue to a high probability the CSC is on its way out.
