Hal's right about the skin cancer. For many years, vets have suggested putting sunblock on the nose and ears of white dogs (and cats). They're more vulnerable to burning.

Just as well that I am not a dog then, I arrived back in the Dordogne tonight after a 12 hour drive, seeing the temperature hit 37°c on the way did not bode well for what was waiting to recieve me, a tin box caravan that has been shut up for the last week I timed it to arrive at last light, 22.00, just enough time & daylight to offload the cool bag which was in fact still cool & hopefully the outside temp would have dropped, it had indeed dropped to 26° which I can happily cope with but inside the tin box was 40° and opening the windows does very little except attract every mosquito and bug known to man. I thought the hammock in the sous sol might be better but its pretty hot in there, only option is to sleep outside but I dont have my camp bed or mozzie net. Everyone tells me that I have to adopt local hours, get up early, work the mornings and have a siesta in the afternoon, very good advice but only if you have somewhere cool to doze and sleep at night, the inside of the caravan can hit 50° in the afternoon with all the thermal blinds closed, I was having to work through till midnight and go to bed at 3am but to do that meant doing heat & ventilation management on the caravan through most of the day, that hasn't been done for a week. I need to get an awning up.

I think a caravan in the Dordogne is the last place to be at the moment ?

I read on a forum somewhere that Lidl are flogging small room aircon units. Apparently work well but run on mains. ££££

I understand that anything associated to Russia is not flavour of the month at present. I have just changed my Blue Nights at The KGB Russian T-shirt as oh thought that I had better not wear it in public at the supermarket. У нас есть способы заставить вас лаять

I read on a forum somewhere that Lidl are flogging small room aircon units. Apparently work well but run on mains. ££££ I have one, they have their place if you want to sit still in front of a cooling breeze whilst simulataneously heating up the rest of the enclose area.
The hoses that extract through a partially open window let far more hot air in than than they exhaust and they are not insulated so its like having a tube heater in the room.
My unit lives under the bed bunk and is ducted through the floor, I have insulated the exhaust duct, it will cool the rest of the van by blowing through the bedroom door but the bed raised above it and the rear of the bedroom get much hotter than they were from the heat generated by the pump, the motor and the fan motor, it all really needs to go outside.
Turning it on in the evening I found consumed loads of electricity for little return if the outside temperatures are going to drop anyway, the problem being letting the outside cooler air in without all the bugs, moths and Tiger Mosquitos.
I used the unit last night and in 3 hours it did drop the temp from 40° to a very bearable 26° but the outside temp was falling anyway.
I need to be outside in the breeze and shade, the latter I dont have.

Last week in Picardie was hot, probably the hottest that I can recall but much more bearable, the big difference being the sun is out but does not burn you and heat up anything in its path like it does here, an 8mm gap has opened up between the cloisons seperating bathroom & shower & bedroom in the last week, the sides of the caravan have bowed, the outside door being flat does not now seal at the top & bottom.
Sorry for thread drift, would have been better in the weather thread.

Ours extracts through a hole in the wall, we have no doors or windows open whilst it is running.
