This morning several friends have reported on FB what I realised here this morning - there is definitely smoke in the air. The paddocks and surrounding fields had a distinct haze over them and the smell of burning was unmistakable. The wind has changed to the SW and is blowing smoke our way from the wildfires in Gironde. We're about 100km from the nearest fires, so it must be unbearable nearer to them.

Yet another reason to continue wearing a mask.

Just in the last hour we are getting it, on the easterly breeze. Quite thick, I think it can't be too far away.

We woke up at 6 this morning and could actually smell the smoke.

Nice and clear here (24, between Perigueux and Sarlat) at 07:30, then 08:30 the sky started changing colour from the West South West, and about 09:00 the arrival of the smoke filled air, it was awful until around 13:30, when it cleared somewhat, just a slight smell lingering. Thoughts with those firefighters, it must be extremely bad for them.

The low-lying smoke that we at first thought was haze has gone now. The sky has covered over quite a bit and we weren't sure whether with smoke or cloud, but now I'm fairly sure it's cloud. Finally, the quite strong smell of burning seems to have gone.

Smoke gone, a few wispy white clouds at high altitude and bright sunshine so temperature going up fast.
The weird thing is there have been a few moments of spitting rain along my travels yet not a dark cloud in sight, at first I thought it was someones sprinkler but it has happened in 3 different places 15 miles apart.
If the fires were nearer and temps cooler I would have said that the largage of water by the fire planes had been picked up by the wind with the smoke.
