Seen on Reuters today :- EDF issues fourth profit warning as nuclear output drops
By REUTERS PUBLISHED: 06:54, 28 July 2022 | UPDATED: 09:39, 28 July 2022
PARIS, July 28 (Reuters) - French power company EDF , which is being nationalised, issued its fourth profit warning of the year on Thursday as it fell to a loss in the first half on lower nuclear output.
Half its 56 nuclear reactors are currently offline due to planned maintenance and work to repair corrosion just as Europe faces an energy crisis.
Nuclear output in France fell by 15% in the first six months of the year, while drought and unusually low river levels meant hydroelectricity production declined by 23%.
Almost as soon as we moved into our house in France our farmer neighbour told us to buy a petrol powered electricity generator. We never needed to use it! Now ensconced in our garage back in England and only run once a month to keep the guarantee up and running.
Hope that nobody loses their power.

On advice, you bought a petrol generator for emergency use in France but haven't needed to use it?
You are now aware that EDF are having problems which may cause electricity supply problems in France.
Your generator is stored in the UK.

So, do you go back once a month to start it up?

I think he was enjoying a moment of smug superiority.

Power shortages have not been mentioned this summer. If there are any problems they will be during the winter months, where they may well need to limit power consumption. It wouldn't be the first time.
Water shortages are more of a problem, with many areas now operating restrictions on watering and filling pools etc. Some are even limiting the water pressure to homes to reduce consumption.

Our water pressure is definitely lower. We're using as little as possible to help conserve what's available.

So we drove past a posh house today where the guy was pressure washing his boat 😬 Actually the Arrêté of 28 juillet doesn't mention boats .. just you can't wash your car except at a car wash where they recycle the water.

I use 15l of mains water a day, I know because every 2 days the water tank low level warning light comes on and I have to refill.
My standing charges will be way higher than the water charge.

'They' turn down smthg in our electricity when it's v v cold .. I'm no electrician but one of our microwaves gave up the ghost during a v cold February one year and my friend's husband, who is an electrician, said there wasn't enough oomph (or whatever it was) to start up the magnetron so the m/wave gives out.
When I politely complained to EDF the delightful person I spoke to .. before Covid .. replied 'Mais Madame, vous êtes au bout du réseau .. qu'est-ce vous attendez ?'

We've just had a quote for fitting solar panels, inverter, battery (10kw) and smart meter giving a maximum of 4kwh electricity production plus the ability to use an agile tariff where we either charge the battery for pennies or sell surplus back to the grid. £13k.
With the phev car and oil central heating we could use up all the leccy and substitute elec heaters except in v cold weather. The woodburner produces maybe half our heating needs
Got a survey next week but, unless we can't have the system at all, I think we'll go for it.
Reduces our reliance on the grid.
