Not really a fan of bbqs, I have been persuaded to purchase a table top bbq or plancha, gas driven, portable. I was wondering whether anyone out there has any experience of these things, which is better, bbq or plancha. Any glitches, recommendations please.
Ah, the days of the brai.
Thanks on advance.

Get a plancha if your not going for a wood/charcoal burner. I don't see the point of bbqs otherwise. I'm tempted by planchas but I do like charcoal. I have access to a Raymond BBQ. It's the top. I might treat myself some day. c€220.

I have an electric plancha, it’s great, ok you don’t get that barbecued taste but it is controllable, which is a massive plus when feeding other people as you can turn it down until they are ready to eat if they’re too busy necking all the rose. I find catering for other people increasingly fraught as I get older.

A plancha is a BBQ without the drips A gas BBQ is a cooker for men who don't/won't cook. Sssshhhh! Don't let on They're also dangerously collectable (apparently). Just one tip....get something with a side burner if possible. Unless you can live on charred aubergine and poivron, they're a Godsend for varying the veggies.

We have a gas plancha , cooked on it last night , kebabs and sweet corn , really easy . It's been a while since I ate food from a BBQ , it's mostly charred , although fresh lobster is great charred.

One comment you'll never hear if you cook on a plancha - "Scrape the black bits off - it's fine underneath.." We bought one shortly after arriving here 15 years ago.. great for fish (sardines in particular). It's still like new. From taking the cover off to starting to cook - 5 mins tops.

Big plus for a plancha. We have electric, separate control for each half. Cost about 300€ Krampouz.

We bought a gas-powered plancha - which cooks perfectly on a still day. However, we often get a slight breeze in the garden and it causes the burners to sputter (if that's a word) as the gas pressure from the bottle is lower than mains gas. In retropect, I think we'd've been better off with an electric one.

I have always cooked on charcoal and will continue to do so, I dont burn the food, you can add wood chips to add flavour to what you are cooking, a plancha is just a flat Electric/Gas frying pan, waste of time IMHO. People are put off of using charcoal, result of friends BBQ party's burnt sausages, burnt chicken, raw inside, poor hygiene standards all sorts to go wrong none of which is the charcoal barbys fault just the thick idiot operating it. I cook just about anything on ours we tend to wear them out so replacement every three years or so. If you cannot lift up bags of charcoal I can understand, but you still have to move the plancha and/or its bottle of gas, now if you have a dedicated BBQ are then you only have to move it twice a year. So my vote for charcoal.

In other words, don't blame the tools, blame the operator.
I will always use charcoal (or wood) because I like the flavour the smoke imparts to the food.
And actually I prefer burnt sausages. If they're not black, send 'em back.

We have a small electric plancha that we use out and about in our CC, whilst on campsites with electric hookups. Safe and takes up little space.
