I have last week, just finished rebuilding a 50kVA Perkins powered genny that I picked up as 'scrap' from ERDF. It will be more than capable of supplying my neighbours, all nine apartments and ourselves should it be required.

If your house is rural, it's a must. The power cuts aren't as frequent as they used to be, but storms, tempêtes, weather events in general can all play havoc with the supply. Just make sure you turn the motor over regularly....

Over the last couple of years we have been getting the Energie Cheque to credit against our EDF bill. Nothing so far this year. Have they stopped it?

In the UK I have a transfer switch so if the grid fails I can plug in a genny, and flick a switch so it is isolated from the grid, and the genny then feeds the consumer unit, do such things exist in France?

If you were here for the storm of 1999/2000 , then you probably know that one of the first things that happened was that the local government made a list of those that had generators and then proceeded to confiscate them for hospitals and old people's homes. It was impossible to buy one anywhere.

They already know about it. I had to get their permission to close the road for a crane to lift the beast over the house to it's placement. It finally cost me more for delivery and placement than it did for the thing itself.

Manual or automatic? I have fitted auto. It has a very low lag time between switching, almost imperceptible for most things.

In the UK its manual, I didn’t want a genny starting up if I wasn’t at home……

Google 'commutater de transfert' and you have hundreds of options - manual, auto, cheap and expensive.

I am looking around to see what our best options are for a diesel generator . Anyone have good experience with generators that could suggest what to buy ?
At the moment we have 12KVA using 500 Kwh/month
