I am in my second French house. In the first one the kitchen consisted of a bucket hanging on a standpipe next to the fireplace, and one of those little enamelled wall doodahs that you hang utensils on. The second one, totally luxurious, had a 15 litre electric water tank over a larger bucket, a mirror, and a handful of tiles on the wall. I suspect it did double duty as a bathroom also. Floors in both were bare concrete.

When we went to look round the rented house, which was to become our first proper French home, in 2005 obviously it was furnished with the current occupiers belongings which included a rather imposing kitchen.
Upon moving into the house a couple of months later said imposing, wooden kitchen had completely disappeared. All there was was a basic, white kitchen sink under the window .. so no worktops, no cupboards, no oven, no fridge .. no anything.
Ah .. so that's what 'maison vide' meant.
As this was the beginning of July we could buy and self-install the carcasses of the kitchen-to-be from Castorama but we had to wait for the doors and drawers until September, when the factories would start production/deliveries again.
In those days it was usual to take your kitchen with you when you moved on .. now less so.

Its still classed as a separate item, as I found out when I made the insurance claim, also two of our friends have moved and taken their kitchens with them, one of which we would not have had in a chicken run

Thats all that is needed, the next step is to invite all your friends round for a housewarming party which is named after said appareil. - OK I have used a bit of artistic license there! fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendaison_de_cr%C3%A9maill%C3%A8re

Kitchens are fascinating - looking forward to the photos too.
our first kitchen was in a rented farm cottage. It was huge, had a massive table, a kitchen range plus an electric cooker, which used to short out when using the grill when rust fell onto the element. The kitchen was big enough to fit our mini’s sub-frame when repairs were needed.
The kitchen in the first house we owned had only a kitchen sink and taps. We bought a basic whitewood unit for storage and used a single burner camping gaz stove on top of our kitchen bin (wedding present) to do all our cooking on - very basic cooking and knees that worked! When we bought a brand new electric cooker I kept getting shocks from it - it turned out that the water pipe the earth wire was attached to had been cut, so it wasn’t earthed!

It looks nice and clean and up to date for a modern house. But I have a feeling black glass wall units wouldn't fit well into my minimalist cleaning regime. Still, that won't be your concern.
