You know all those times the word hero is used inappropriately? That's not one of them.

‘ He ( Barlow) later found out that the man had been released from hospital and that he had had a seizure.‘ Makes one think. Re the ‘all bad news ‘ in press point another story linked at the foot of the page which carries it www.theguardian.com/society/2022/sep/05/nhs-whistleblower-wins-dismissal-case-against-england-health-regulator-cqc-manchestermakes me wonder if some sort of an attempt of manipulation is going on. For CQC read ‘Ministry of Truth’. Let us pray that the worm is turning. and the beat goes on…. from another story ‘ Kumar was awarded £23,000 for injury to his feelings.‘ I would be a multi millionaire if I was compensated for my feelings being hurt.

I would like to think I could have done that, but until you are hit with the situation, you just don’t know……..

It needed somebody quick-thinking, not worried about trying something unusual and brave, who had a larger, heavier car than that of the poor driver. I think that very few people would fit that description.
Until an emergency of any sort arises, none of us knows how we’d act, as Johnny D. says.

My little old Clio is neither heavy nor large .. so adding that to my lack of knowledge of how to slow down someone else's moving car proves the point to me.

You pull in front and gently slow down till the gap diminishes to nothing, when the runaway vehicle touches you you brake slowly and progressively making sure that both vehicles remain aligned.
That the runaway vehicle was travelling at 30mph indicates that the driver was off the throttle and in top gear, the engine idle stabiliser circuit would maintain the idling speed which equates to that speed in top gear, even very gentle braking would cause it to stall pretty much immediately and come to a stop, the lack of damage to the intervention vehicle shows how little contact there was.

I have just completed a 12 hour door to door journey during which I brake tested 3 severe tailgaters, I don't think any of them had had a seizure as their reactions were fast enough to avoid contact, it may have resulted in some brown trousers though I hope!

I guess the question is...why? It may well have caused a problem for the other car and indeed yourself and I bet you would not have told the gendarmes that you were testing the car behind for their ability to brake in time?

For many years I played football with a guy who had epilepsy and it was severe enough that he wasn't allowed to drive so we always had to pick him up on the way to games. Several times he had a seizure in the car so we had to quickly pull over and hold him until the seizure passed, it was always scary but amazingly within a few minutes he was back to normal as if nothing had happened.

I used to employ pcpa's brake testing method until I felt the risk too great because there are so many drunk drivers around here. Now I just very slowly reduce speed until they decide they've had enough of playing the game. Just a few days ago I went from 80kph (the limit) down to about 60kph over some distance before the dickhead got the message.
