A benevolent dictator would be a very good idea but they are a bit thin on the ground. With power comes greed so its a risky ground to tread.

I feel sorry for our neighbour's lad. It was his FIRST birthday on September the 8th and the Queen died on the same day, so it put the mockers on it somewhat. So, for years into the future on his birthday he's going to get, "Didn't the Queen die today in 2022?" This is guaranteed!

Just to buck the trend, I'd say that it's high time the monarch had more power to curtail the greed, ambition and incompetence displayed by successive governments. Perhaps it's idealist to think that someone in his position has so much already that he'd show more compassion and genuine concern for his subjects than a bunch of self-serving nobodies You mean , they need a dictator ? No that's not what I mean.

Having a say in running the country. I would say so, hidden discussions "chas 3 " for instance on who builds what.Royal family in general is a secret society as far as In'm concerned.

Charles III will undoubtedly reduce the size of the Royal establishment and stipends in the future. He has already said so somewhere or other.
Much of the so called wealth is not theirs but belongs to the State, such as Buckingham Palace. I think that only Sandringham is their private property. But much more interesting is the royal art collection which is fabulous and eye wateringly valuable. It was rebuilt by Charles II after Cromwell flogged it abroad but some items were never returned. Successive monarchs added to it. Who actually owns it is a delicate point. The Duchy of Corwall belongs to the nation AFAIK but is used by the heir as an income for himself and his or her family. Charles managed it very well, increased the income substantially. He also handed out money to his kids.

And he pays income tax on the income from the Duchy. It is however privately owned.

Will there be some inheritance tax to pay?

If you start extracting inheritance tax then you will reduce the Duchy and the income it produces so that the taxpayer will have to make up the shortfall. Maybe that the way of reducing the Monarchy over a couple of generations to simple Council house dwellers?

Just been talking to our daughter's partner and he said that it will be even worse for bairns actually born on the day she died.

Most of the Royal Family's asset wealth is effectively owned by the state and therefore cannot be sold for their personal gain so in reality whilst they are sitting pretty with £50 billion of land, property and investments their 'real wealth' combined is less than that of Paul McCartney.

Or Nelson Mandela?

Will there be some inheritance tax to pay? No. William does not gain this because the previous custodian (KC III) has died. Consider this as dad retiring and passing on a bit of the family business to the elder son.
