Another one please - maybe one for Mysty or pcps.,
I need to dig a narrow thrench, maybe 150M long, 40cms deep or so for a 25mm poly pipe.
Excluding supply of sand and pipe - what can I expect to pay a man with his digger per metre do you think?

No idea what region you are in but if your on FB you should be able to find a man and digger for 200/350 a day. You even get French offering that kind of work on LBC

Tarne region.
How many metres of a shallow water pipe trench could a competant operator dig in a day - across a field?

I saw a programme where they ran the blue plastic pipe behind a tractor that laid a water pipe for animal water troughs across a field, the tractor, first it furrowed the soil, laid the blue plastic pipe and then covered it up all in one go, don't know what it in called in French but a trip to a Farming supplies company who sell the pipe should know someone who can do that all in one go. Hope that helps.

Just a thought. 40cm may not be deep enough to avoid freezing in a cold winter.
Our main is slightly deeper but because we are at the end of a spur and consequently the flow is intermittent, we lost our water supply for 19 days in 2012.
It may be that it does not matter if there is a risk of no supply in winter.

Yes to the depth - it should be half a metre to 60cms to avoid the frost line. The pipe is to four summer horse paddocks, so if there is another 2012, not an issue, other than zi do not want it so shallow that the poly pipe is in danger of slitting.
A pipe layer would be nice, but the only one around here I know of is on a massive meteor tractor that lays 2” irrigation pipe. Aall I need really is a hand controlled micro digger - but cant find one for love nor money here!
Thanks

Standard HDPE water pipe should be perfectly able to withstand complete freezing without splitting.

Agreed.
I must bury the final couple of meters of the supply pipe to my caravan very soon.
Is 50 to 60cm all that is needed this far South? In Les Hauts de France it was 80cm.

I have a large vintage British Bulldog steel spade and loads of tools for sale that would do the job. Elbow grease not supplied.

My French spade and an English stainless steel fork served me well when I had to dig a hole for my 3000 litre fosse. It took me about 5 weeks. The only digger man that responded was vague about what he would charge. "Somewhere between 3 and 4 hundred euros." Yet another Anglais wide boy. I told him what he could do with his digger.

It is quite amazing! With me asking, I have prices back of 13€ per metre, 20€ per metre, and between 15 and 50€ per metre A friend with a local accent, we have 360€ per day and anticipates a day is enough depending if the going becomes stoney, another similar but 410€ per day and waiting for a third...

Make sure the devis includes filling in the trench after putting in the pipe . I rented a 2.5tn mini pelle (without driver) last year for the weekend ( Friday evening- Monday morning), it cost €430, transport and insurance included, I have a devis from a different address this year at €350 for the weekend , but I would expect it to be more expensive since the price of diesel ( transport) has shot up. So if the land is flat and you can learn quick, probably less expensive to hire ? As you say , changing accent , changes the price !

I have worked on large earthmoving sites in Australia - man sized dozers not a problem, graders not a problem even scrapers are ok. I can fly a helicopter, but do you think I can use a back hoe/digger? Not a chance, never could !
