One of our young neighbours is a hunter . He came round on Sunday morning to ask if he could chasse the wildboar off our land with his dogs so to be able to shoot them . It is a different aproach , up until now they just used to put their dogs in without asking. There were 7 sangliers on our land , they shot two of them and we were given some lovely chops. I feel that the younger hunting generation is a little more accepting of " us foreigners" .

We had a battue in our little valley last weekend, although I suspect that they were after chevreuil. TBH we've never had a problem with the official chasse round here. They've always been respectful of the rules, sober ( ) and friendly. Until recently, the Prés of la pêche was a Brit. Unlike the paloumayres, aggressively shoo-ing everyone else out of 'their' woods and recreating what sounds like the Battle of Stalingrad from dawn to dusk every autumn, all over a few pigeons . Still, on the bright side, they regularly fall out of their tree-houses, blind drunk, and break their necks. Or rivals set fire to aforementioned tree-houses which, given the amount of booze stored in them, makes for a merry blaze

They didn't like me from the start houpla . The house and land had been empty for 7 years, so everyone came and fished, mushroomed and collected the nuts and apples. Told me to "go back to where I came from" pointing a gun at me . So I just applied for all the land to be Non Chasse , that really put the Englishman amongst the locals ! They have quietened down now , ( half have died since). We had one old neighbour that built little shelters in the woods to sit in and wait for the pigeons to arrive. He stopped doing it after I had asked him which kids were making huts in the woods. I really thought it was kids from the village, didn't know any better!

We have a cordial relationship with our local chasse, even though we refuse them permission to hunt on our 13 hectares. In part, our reasoning is that we have horses, dogs and cats and do not want 'accidents' to happen involving them. But we are morally against hunting too. Having lived in an active agricultural area here though we also appreciate the damage the sangliers cause for the farmers and have a certain sympathy with them. The chasse has presented us with some prime pieces over the years, but I always have a certain unease about that ............... as though by accepting the gift I am in some way tacitly giving my approval to something that I really do not approve of.

We are like you Veem. We see the need to cull wild boar but in general don't approve of hunting. It can be awkward at times .. not for our neighbour, who is a skilled boar killer, but for us.
OH took our neighbour to Urgences the time he cut himself badly on a broken glass whilst washing up. The cuts were deep and long so needed various stitches. He is divorced and was without a partner at the time so on his own. Some time later after a hunt the neighbour brought round some prime boar meat for my OH with instructions on how to cook it, as a second thank you .. we'd already been given a bottle of good red wine 😊 It was thoughtful of our neighbour, who we like a lot, so we are pleased he is so busy with his job (and his new partner) that boar are the only animals he has time to hunt.

Took my first boar of the season on Sunday and four wabbits. Wabbits dressed, cooked as eight portions of stew and in the freezer. The boar has been butchered and dressed and in the freezer also.

@ Arrdvark The guy that was shot near where we were staying at just after we moved from Ariege certify was.
If you can find the official annual accidental death statistics caused by hunting incidents in France you might be shocked.
I wonder how they compare with the rest of the world.
I would love to know more stories like the one about the sanglier that finished up in the swimming pool of a neighbour of ours.

Dressing a rabbit , brings Beatrix Potter up in my mind ! We saw a rabbit here last month , they were wiped out before we arrived. There was one here when we arrived. My English cat couldn't believe his luck! It lasted him three days Didn't see any more until very recently I found 'evidence' on the grass. Not sure whether it might be hares, though. There are about a dozen of those in the fields round about.
