In the Uk I think it's the the RSPCA with whom you can make arrangements for your animal to be looked after if they outlive you or you have to go into a home etc. Do you know of a similar scheme in France? What plans have you made, if any?

The SPA has lots of dogs and cats from deceased people.

Harsh as it sounds, my vet has been paid and knows what to do...
But yes, it is the SPA if you want your pet rehomed unless a relative takes on the responsibility. There are some breeds who have dedicated charities as well.

SPAs are under extreme pressure and some will only home an animal for 7 days

So you have organised to have your pets killed when you die?

Doesn't a lot depend on the probable age of the pet (s) when you depart? We took a conscious decision not to acquire any more cats, much as I'd love a constant supply of kittens. As our cats are 13 and 9 years old, barring accidents, I reckon one or both of us will see them out. If not, well they've already had a much better life than that of the average French moggie and there's no way I'd want them to suffer the distress of being incarcerated in a refuge for a week before being PTS anyway.

Yes, I think anyone who loves their pet might thinl the same houpla.
I have no immediate family and the people who love him have other commitments, so unfair to ask them. he loves people. Must have a friend nearby at all times!
The alternative of being stressed out and lonely, languishing in a wire cage surrounded by unfamiliar noise is not an option. Instead he will be taken to the vet, whom he adores, by someone he trusts, get an extra treat or two and go to sleep not feeling a thing in spoilt surroundings he is used to.
So please do not judge.

We went to the SPA 4 years ago, with the idea of getting an old dog that would live to the same age as us . We came back with a puppy that was so scared that the people there were worried that he would never be housed. He is our companion and friend now , he needed the freedom that he has here and will have to leave this earth when we do, but we havn't made plans for that yet. Being farmers, we know our vet well, so whatever we/they choose will be the best for our friend.
