Blow me down! not 3 minutes later a une danse des grues passed directly overhead, first time I have ever witnessed it! At least I assume they were grues, flying in a vee formation with smaller sub vees forming from each wing, honking like mad, or would they be geese? They were either lucky or chose today because there were no flights, they crossed the flightpath at what looked to be the altitude the planes reach on the climb out from the aéroport. I like 'une danse des grues'.

They must be on the move again. Several 'packs' flew over us this afternoon. What do you call a 'pack of' grues? Edit: couldn't think of the word, but probably flock. The French say "une nuée de grues cendrées"

I don’t know; other than it sounds as though it could have been groovy.

The cranes have started to move South again , with more than 6000 passing L'Yonne this morning. They are staying longer than normal in the North , due to the weather.

Do they honk or cackle while flying?

Do they honk or cackle while flying? They cry " grue, grue" that is why the French call them grues. It's " les motoristes maghrebins" that honk and 'Les tricoteuses " that cackle!

Tuesday afternoon, a familiar sound high above us, not only sky but also those grues flying in perfect V formation, no gps, without any academic degree in aerodynamics:

Bit shabby. They look more like rookies to me.

THey have started to fly South West again , leaving the Lac du Der Wednesday and Thursday . Is the name of that lac for real??? Daniel Pennac would love it! Haven't seen any grue so far this autumn, but hardly surprising given the recent temps. I'd expect to see some today, though, if they fly in the rain. Temps due to drop to 5°C tonight

@ Nifty, a quick snapshot, simple smartphone, not a high resolution pro camera with zoom lens.
