I wonder if anyone can shed light on this problem.
A relative living in France, using a smart phone with an Orange sim, cannot text, reply to my texts or call me in the UK (texts show "not delivered") although I can call and send texts to their phone from my UK phone and sim.
We have both used another phone with same sims to no effect. Orange France c/s states there is no problem with their service or sim. The UK provider states the same about their sim.
The relative's partner can make calls and send texts from their French phone/sim to the UK phone without problem.
There are no blocked numbers on either phone.

Does their contract allow calls à l’étranger?
Could they be blocked in one of the phone settings?

reply to my texts or call me in the UK
This implies to me that your relative receives your texts, yes? I had similar a while back. If so, then sounds like the setting on the phone - although I do not now if this setting applies to calls as well, but worth a try: Either go into the Orange web site and find 'SMS Service Centre settings', or easier and better, google it with the type of phone and there will be loads to guide you through it. (I say this assuming that you do have 'enable SMS' turned on in your options...yes?)

I use Free at 2€/month and can call landlines in the UK but not mobiles. Similar? I also use Free at 2eu/month and couldn't call mobiles a l'etranger including other EU countries. I had to go into my account and tick the relevant box to allow it and make a payment of 10eu (I think) to the phone and it worked after that. The 10Eu was used as a credit balance on the phone. No need to top up since.

I use Free at 2€/month and can call landlines in the UK but not mobiles. I wish I'd known that! I have a double sim and used up the significant balance on my Tesco credit hanging on for either the tax office or Coop Bank. At least now I know that I don't need another. Thank you!

When we changed our ADSL supply to Fibre, same supplier, SFR, we were, or my OH, was offered amongst other things a sweetener for her moby contract, an additional SIM which gives 2hrs a month calls to UK mobys, landline calls were already included in her contract. Moral: speak to your provider and renegotiate.

That was my situation, I had happily been using it for years, any calls or texts were debitted at the end of the relevant month, I dont pay the €2 as its Free to me being a Free ADSL abonnée which might have some bearing on the next paragraph.
It worked fine till this year when i made a lot of calls to the UK, I was away from the ADSL so had to use the mobile, I got a warning saying that I was approaching the limit of my prepayment, €10 i think it was, that confused me as I did not think it was ever used, they have always debitted my bank account, then I could make no more calls to the UK or use the phone in the UK the next month when I expected it to be cleared by the prélévement.
Apparently I have to make another deposit payment via my page perso on the web but I have looked everywhere and cannot see where to do so nor do any of the Free help pages or forums give me any clue.
It has remained like that for several months now, does anybody know how to make an additional deposit and why it was used this time but not before?

There is no "details" to cliquer, the only one further up the page is for the "Booster" option of more data.
It is showing that "Communications depuis la France vers l'étranger" and "Communications à l'International" are both activées, to my knowledge I still cant make calls or send texts, I will give it another try in case it has reset.
I note from your text that my understanding was correct, you only pay it once.
I think its a deposit and also a spending limit in case they are not able to debit your account, in that case my should be re-established.

False alarm I'm pleased to say, it has all reset, the month in question was August/September and not before as I thought, the billing cycle is the 10th of the month and the prélèvement is not made until the 13th, I was probably expecting the phone to start working again at the beginning of the month.
I sold my UK house on the 6th of September hence so many phone calls to and from the UK, the UK calls were blocked as from the 23rd August, the point at which the hors forfait cost exceeded the €10 but strangely they still allowed me to make chargeable calls in France.
It stopped working at the point I needed it most but I actually pay for a second mobile line which was for the smartphone used for the credit card reader, now redundant and it now serves as my Wi-fi hotspot to give me internet access here in Bergerac, an uneccessary expense amongst others but for those crucial 2 weeks it was priceless.

Does data still work? My UK phone used to do it - the solution was WhatsApp or Messenger rather than texts.

That is not a solution to a problem but a workaround and does not shed any light as requested by the OP.
It also makes the assumption that anyone having called or texted your number has a smartphone (and that yours is also) and is a WhatsApp user, it would be of no use to BJ's friend if they had missed a call from a UK mobile number. Many people like myself still use an old school mobile phone for a mobile phone.
Beejay, have any of the suggestions looked promising?

UK phone is a basic 2G Doro 5030 without WhatsApp or other apps.. The previous phone was a Nokia of the same type and had the same problem. A replacement sim has been ordered.
Both the UK phones can send and receive texts/call with French relatives partner's phone.
Edit: The French phone texts/calls a number of other relatives in the UK without problem albeit they are all smartphones. In theory. there should be no problem with 2G to 3/4/5G phones.
